Beautiful. Doing a total refit takes lots of dedication, time and $$!

You started out with one of the best of the period and are doing a great job.

Thanks for sharing.

If one has a lot of skills in different areas it is a pleasure that working on these boats provide an outlet to use and develop even more skills as progress is made. Sometimes it seems overwhelming .Then comes the point where the first sea trials begin and all the time and $ come together.

We started on our Cape Dory 31 in April 2013 and so close now to having our first sail. https://capedory31.wordpress.com/
It is a WONDERFUL madness. You are doing a fantastic job, very lovely. Let's all keep these fine old Cape Dorys out on the water for many years to come. I think somewhere "up there" Carl Alberg is smiling.

That is a great line. It could apply to all boat ownership. "A wonderful madness."

Re: 40 yr old Cape Dory gets a face lift

I turned Karen down twice before I bought her. " I'm too old to bring another boat back from the edge of the grave", I whined. The third time I looked at her, looking horribly neglected for a one owner boat, I swear she said, "hey, old man, I'll make a deal with you. You save me, and I'll save YOUR sorry ass." Seems to be working so far.

Any body doing serious boat work is crazy as a **** house or a wharf rat.

It's a joy, however. I'm just glad to see a post that isn't I'm buying a wreck and have no idea what I'm getting into or how to do it.

We knew exactly what we were doing and did it anyway. Maybe that makes us the truly crazy ones. At least the others can plead ignorance.

Re: 40 yr old Cape Dory gets a face lift

What else do I have to spend my pension on? At least I'm leaving a great boat in voyaging condition for a younger sailor to enjoy. It isn't about resale value. I got her cheap and when she's done, I'll have about what she's worth into her and she's given me a home. The most these A35's can be worth is 15-30K,no matter what you do to them, so it helps, no its VITAL to get them for little money, as they will take every nickel you can get your hands on to bring'em back.

Re: 40 yr old Cape Dory gets a face lift

The truly sad part of the story was when I brought her home my wife climbed up the ladder took one look inside and started yelling at me. What the hell are you thinking? this is a piece of crap. She had a fit the entire night in front of a group of our friends. Oh by the way, she is an X-wife these days. God works in mysterious ways. Later that year I met a wonderful woman that absolutely loves the boat and can't wait to go sailing. She designed the interior color scheme and is by my side the entire way.

A knowledgeable viewpoint. Enjoy the labor of love.
