Yanmar 3JH2E manufacture date?

I'm buying a sailboat in Canada to bring back to the US. The customs broker says I need to file an EPA form, which needs an engine build date on the form.

I've emailed the serial number and model to the biggest Yanmar dealer around, they can't help, except that it was made between 1992 and 1999... referred me to their distributor. Distributor can't help, says they're waiting for an answer from Yanmar.

I've emailed the Yanmar contact addresses, no luck so far.

Can anyone determine a build date from a model and serial number? Any ideas on where I can get that information. Seems like it should be a pretty simple code, but impossible to decipher for most of us.

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, bc376.

“... Currently, Yanmar dealers do not have the means to easily cross reference to build date, date of commission, warranty status etc.. “

I always talk to Mack Boring in New Jersey. They never fail to be a help! (908) 964-0700. Hope they can help you.

Thanks for the replies!

Mack Boring was very polite, but stated they only have records of engines they sell... "this engine was most likely not sold by Mack Boring & Parts since Hunter Boats are built in FL."

They indicated it was most likely supplied by
Mastry Engine Center in FL.

Mastry Engine Center wrote...
"Unfortunately that model engine was being sold before we implemented our computers for tracking serial #’s".

So far emails to Yanmar remain unanswered.

If the boat is between 1992 and 1999 I'd just pick the year of the boat. Rather than
How much trouble can you get into?

It seems to me that if nobody has a precise listing, you can safely pick a date within the range supplied by Yanmar and nobody will be able to contradict you!

Regards,
Richard.

Re: Yanmar 3JH2E manufacture date?

It may be that simple... but US customs requires an EPA form and I must indicate the build date or give a reason why I don't know the build date. For engines between 19 and 37 kw it must be made before Jan 1st 1999, or an EPA certificate is also required.

Since the boat is a 1998 model it seems reasonable (to me) to assume the engine is also a 1998. In that case it would be grandfathered as far as EPA certification is concerned. No problem... provided they don't ask for proof that the engine hasn't been replaced.

Anyway, I thought it should be easy to get a build date, just to be sure.
