Shifting Cable [?] Slipped

hi all.

a week ago, this forum saved me calling an electrician and helped educate me as to all things 12v / alternators.

today, I have a new problem.

a few days ago, I pushed my throttle forward [Yanmar 2GM] and while that would usually result in accelerating, this time it did not and topped out at 2000rpms.

am now in the boatyard and disconnected the cable that attaches to the little lever on the diesel itself [apologies - don't know the word for that] and can manually rev up the motor, which tells me it's a cable problem.

I think?

I've attached photos of both the cable and the box that attaches to the throttle, as I can see the screw that attaches the throttle to the boat seems a bit loose.

also, as you can see from one of the photos, it appears as if the rubber sleeve [?] is back further than it should be.

again, sorry for not knowing all of the terms. am sure if I did, this could be sorted out a lot earlier.

any suggestions / advice welcome.

If you have a mechanical dual function control, there is a cable to shift and a cable for throttle. Are you shifting or not? Hard to help without more info

It appears from the last photo that you have separate cables for throttle and gear sift as I would expect. It's important that the outside sheath of the cable is attached well to a fixed position while the inside of the cable slides freely to perform the function. My first thought would be to check to make sure that this outer portion of the cable is secure at both ends of it's length.
