Raw water intake for generator

Hi,

I am about to install a raw water intake for our new ONAN generator in our Jeanneau 53.

Since we already have more than 20+ intakes and outlets in the hull I was thinking of reusing the outlet that drains my halyard locker at the cockpit entrance (sole purpose and same dimension) instead of making just another intake.

The idea is to add a Y-connector just above the ball valve and feed raw water to the sea strainer that way?

Is that a bad idea?

Steen

If it meets the intake requirement of the installation manual its definitely OK. I originally teed mine into the head suction line, but later moved the head suction and sink drain to the same outlet and then the generator had its' own.

Re: Raw water intake for generator

Whenever you tie more than one line into one thru hull, it's possible to suck air or contents from the other line.
It can start out fine, but if the thru hull clogs just a little, then of course the generator pump will pull from the path of least resistance, which can be the other line of course.
You may have to install a ball valve and then close it whenever you intend to run the generator.

Thanks a lot a64pilot.
I did not consider the risc of pulling air from the drain.

Good solution which I will implement

Re: Raw water intake for generator

I suggest you read Mane Sail's excellent write up re proper seacocks:
Welcome To MarineHowTo.com Photo Gallery by Compass Marine How To at pbase.com

You state that you already have 20 thru hulls.
Will one more,done properly,make a difference??

Hope this helps/ Len
