Raw water and strainer size for Yanmar 4JHE

I need to replace my sea strainer, and its got 1 1/4" hose from the seacock and then 1" from the strainer to the water pump">raw water pump.

First, I don't think I can find an exact replacement.

Second, I don't think I can find a replacement with that hose combination.

Questions:
1) Is it "normal" to have different hose sizes in and out? My prior boat was 1.5" all around

2) What is the appropriate hose size and flow in general for the 4JHE?

3) If I need to adapt hoses down to 1", is there a quality female-male fitting for that?

My 3JH4E Yanmar has a sherwood 1 1/4" through hull and strainer. I would keep the intake and strainer at 1 1/4" and use an adapter further down streams when necessary.
That way you keep the through hull at original dimensions, have a correctly dimensioned strainer and can find without a problem the new strainer.

Larger the intake, the better in my opinion as you still can get good flow when partially blocked.

Intake size on the raw water pump for my 4JHE is 1”.

Absolutely there is and they are an easy fit.

A good quality bronze strainer is not going to be cheap, you may want to see about going used.
I personally dislike plastic myself. Your existing one may clean up just fine with a bead blaster, mine was 30 yrs old and cleaned up like new.

This is what mine looked like after bead blasting, of course the plastic water tank was removed. The gaskets were leaking after 30 yrs and needed replacing. It looked as bad as your before cleaning.
If you have to replace yours, every individual piece part for this model strainer is widely available

Re: Raw water and strainer size for Yanmar 4JHE

on my 4JH2E I have a Raritan RWS strainer. Ther ports are 1.5" NPT which is more than needed so I have the output bushed down to 1"NPT which is what the Intake on the Yanmar is. The seacock in the intake side is full 1.5" and its work really well. The strainer is large so can collect a heck of alot of material before the needed flow is reduced. and because the filter basket is relatively large, its easy to deal with

Re: Raw water and strainer size for Yanmar 4JHE

I'm a fan of the Groco ARG series. I've had the ones with the glass bowls and long bronze rods like mentioned above earlier. PITA to take apart and clean. The Grocs's come in many hose fitting sizes and have both 1" and 1-1/4" inlet/outlets. Only real choices are plastic, monel or stainless strainer element. I like the SS or monel ones at least for engines.
I have 6 of various sizes on my boat for genset, engines, two A/C and head.

I don’t know what you haven I’ve not seen it before.
Why are you replacing it though? It may just need a new gasket if it’s leaking, that and a clean up and it may be fine

Right - a new gasket (likely a whole new lid) would require knowing what it is and sourcing parts...

Lid yes, gaskets are easy to cut yourself.
Up to you of course, a good replacement starts at about $300 I believe.

Hi kev_rm,

Did you ever find out what type of strainer this is? We have the same one on our CT-38 and it's so fouled up I can't even pull out the strainer element to see what it looks like.

Any info you have found out would be greatly appreciated!
