Raw pump leaking on Perkins 4.108

My raw pump started to leak before I had my sailing boat on storage for 2 years. But now it gets much harder when I started running the engine again after engine rebuilding. I will attach a picture of the pump where you may see where it is leaking from. There is a small hole at the center of the pump. And then when I will return on the boat I will look to find, if there I have some documentation about the pump.

I noticed that it leaks much more I shut engine down. Now I am not sure if it actually leaks when engine is running.

My question is how to repair this? What must I do?

The front cover of the pump should have the make and model number (my guess is a Sherwood), Google that and look for a rebuild kit that has the shaft seals, bearings and other internal parts. These pumps are straightforward to rebuild and if the shaft is not too worn it should be good as new.

That weep hole is there to let you know to start saving for a new engine if you don’t take care of it soon. You are one seal away from pumping seawater into you engine. As Steve said either rebuild or replace the pump.

Thank you

https://www.pumpvendor.com/Sherwood_G65_G-65_parts.html

From the imagine in link bearings listed under number 3 stops water to enter in the engine. Or there is something else?
Lip seal under number five prevents the water to leak from pump.

I have shaft, bearings and lip seal. Or maybe some other parts. I will look more latter.

Is it complicate to dissemble and to resemble the pump?

I must have also the impeller somewhere.

On the one side pump cover keeps shaft not to move.
Is it the injection pump which holds shaft to move in opposite way?

What hold bearings not to move in direction pump cover?

Inner and outter bearings need to be pressed off/on. Check shaft and ensure it’s not worn or it’ll leak again when you reassemble.

Re: Raw pump leaking on Perkins 4.108

Will it be clear when I will take the pump down tomorrow morning in which direction shaft has to be pressed?

What is the procedure to exchange the bearings?
Is there a step by step manual?

Not the exact same pump but it’ll give you an idea

I’d replace the whole pump but keep the original so that you can perhaps refurbish it. Not a difficult job but you’ll need a decent press for those bearings.

Those pumps are close to $500. Id be more concerned about getting rid of that old reinforced vinyl hose on the raw water supply.

As I recall, there are a couple of snap rings (circlips, to us Commonwealth types) I use a vice, and appropriate sized sockets, to remove and install the bearings and seals. Be very careful not to nick the seal as you fit it over the shaft.

Re: Raw pump leaking on Perkins 4.108

They are easy to rebuild. I have done mine without a press, not the same pump but same engine. IIRC I used a screw clamp to force the old parts out and the new parts in.

The tricky part is to properly align the pump when reinstalling it. The end of the shaft that goes into the engine is, for lack of better words like an oversized flat blade screw driver tip going into a slot on a power takeoff gear. They must be perfectly aligned or the pump will wear or break quickly. Consult your manual. The process I used was to leave the bolts holding the pump just tight enough to hold it in place but could be pushed side to side. Started the engine to center the pump, and then tightened the bolts. That worked for me YMMV.

10514 o ring seams to big. It is almos 1,5 milimeter larger than the one I had before.

What is going on?
