Perkins M30 is this motor legitimate?

I'm sure this forum's members will have an answer for this problem.

12 years ago I bought a Beneteau from an American owner and soon after found broken piston rings in one cylinder. After buying parts and gasket sets off the shelf from a dealer in St Maarten I had a local engineer repair the engine using those parts and had no further trouble.

Until this year in Australia. The end of an injector broke and jammed a piston destroying it and cracking the cylinder wall.

No Perkins agents in Australia recognise the engine as a Perkins. Some say the engine number is fake or mistakenly quoted even though I've sent photos of it to them.

Can a manufacturer of engines deny all responsibility for their product after a set amount of time?

Re: Perkins M30 is this motor legitimate?

Very legitimate. Perkins made this engine exactly the same for Volvo Penta as the MD 2030. Perkins is now owned by Caterpillar. Perkins originally imported the blocks from a venerable Japanese company, Ishikawajima Shibaura Machinery (ISM). Perkins marinized the engine and marketed it as the Perama M30. Between the Perama/Perkins M 30 and the Volvo Penta MD 2030 you shouldn't have a problem searching for parts although your engine may be toast anyway. It seems odd that any Perkins repair service would disavow knowledge of this particular model given 10's of thousands were sold for marine and farm use. Yours could, in fact, be some odd occurrence of a counterfeit of some sort. Best of luck with the repair.

Re: Perkins M30 is this motor legitimate?

Perkins M30 and Volvo Penta are ISM (Shibaura) model 103-10. This 103-10 is cast into the block-lower right front corner IIRC.
Parts available from tractor/industrial folks. I have one sitting in my garage, built in 1985,radiator cooled,285 actual hrs, runs beautifully.

Cheers/ Len

Do an internet search for Perkins M30 and you will find lots of parts suppliers, workshop manuals, etc.

I can only find empty promises in Australia. If there was only one engine of this specification produced, even if it was sometimes rebranded, surely there are pistons available somewhere.

Have you tried this Aussie parts and service supplier - they seem to know all about the M30.

Yes I swapped a few emails with Shane at Noordeman, he doesn't have parts for any engine without an engine number he knows.

He even suggested it's a Chinese copy.

Make contact with The Rock Tractor Centre, the Rock NSW, with your newly acquired knowledge. These people have Australia's foremost Perkins knowledge.

Re: Perkins M30 is this motor legitimate?

Show us the number. “Parts4engines” in UK seem to have a good knowledge of both the Perama and the MD2030/40 engines as well as almost all the parts you would ever need.
Losing the “end of an injector” on a precom engine is an unusual occurrence, how did that actually happen?
Perkins used a K prefix for the shibaura so look for KD, KL or similar on a plate near the injector pump. These engines were used by a lot of companies... Northern lights, caterpillar, Toro tractors and many more and it seems they claim the engines as their own and ignore the connection to Shibaura possibly leading to the confusion regarding identifying numbers.

OK, I'm confused - what number are you referring to; M30 or serial number or some other number.

Noordeman clearly knows about the M30; they go into some detail of it's history on the web link (previously posted) yet they are telling you they don't that engine number

Keep looking around, I'm sure you will to the bottom of it if you ask enough places. Good luck with your endeavours!

Its also the engine from a Ford 1220 small tractor. Go to the local ford tractor dealer.

The original engine is a Shibaura S753

Re: Perkins M30 is this motor legitimate?

My engine showed up when I put the number in

https://shop.perkins.com/support/identify-your-engine

and I found parts4engines extremely efficient and helpful

https://www.parts4engines.com

No connection with either company except I own an M30.
