Poking to buy a new outboard for my cal25. Tohatsu makes a 6hp, 4 stoke, 25" shaft, called sail pro. Any advice or opinions

Not knowing where you do your boating, I would opt for a slightly larger, 9.9hp, motor. 6hp will move the boat, but if punching into waves or current the bigger motor will give you more push.

Welcome aboard. If your Cal 25 has a transom cut-out like some of the Cal 27s you will be restricted as to what will fit in the cut-out. Some of these were built with the smaller 2 strokes in mind and when one tries to install a four stroke which has a larger head you can't swing it up. If however you have a flush transom with a stern mounting bracket you can go to a bigger size without a problem. Within reason of course. A lot of Cal 25s are powered by 6HP outboards. Depends on how much current you have to buck, as to how fast you will go.

These newer Trolling/Sail pro motors are very powerful. We used to install some of the yamaha 8 hp with the huge propellors. Incredible motor. No problem pushing 29 ft fishing boats along against wind chop and quiet as heck. If I remember right those had a 12" prop! I think Suzuki might make one also.

Something to be aware of on the Tohatsu 9.9, some of them were apparently built with an alloy that does not hold up well in salt water. The alloy weakens and major parts literally start breaking off in your hands. I've had this problem, and know several friends who have had the same problem, but does not seem to happen with all of them. Otherwise, good little engine.

Have one sitting in my bodega right now which I am debating about whether to rebuild.

I guess that is possible with the 9.9's. I have 9.8HP of recent vintage (2005) that are just fine here in the NE. I understand that these outboards are used day-in day-out by small scale fisherman in Japan. That is, they take a lickin', etc.

I put a Parson 5hp on my boat while saving coupons to get the diesel overhauled.

On my 2500kg boat the 5 hp is adequate to push the boat in and out of the marina. I get about 4 1/2 knots boat speed and against our sometimes 2 knot currents it is marginal. The internal tank is about .8 liter and I get about 1 hour of motoring with that capacity on my heavy boat. I put a 6 gallon external tank on that should yield about 10 hours.

If you are looking for "primary" propulsion you might want to go with 9.9 as others suggest.

The Parsun is a direct Chinese knock off of the Yamaha. In 6 months of use it is doing fine and was 1/2 the Yamaha price.

Parsuns look more like a Merc' than a Yammy, to my blind eyes.

Our club had an Islander Excalibur 26, 3800 lbs. It had a 6 hp on it and would do hull speed. If there were waves it was out of the water half the time and it wouldn't matter how big the engine is then. Unless you have something that planes I don't see how a bigger engine is going to help in current.

Oops, that should have of course been 9.8. Does not seem to be an issue with all of them, maybe just a certain year or production run -- don't know, but mine has all but died of corrosion and a friend's did the same thing.

I plan to see what it cost to replace the effected parts, but it is major components of the engine so probably not worthwhile. Too bad, I like the engine.
