help with Westerbeke hoses to water heather

Hi
Have an old water heather 6 gals 110 volts/engine heating I want to remove.
The system has also a second heat exchange/expansion tank higher than the engine connected to the regular engine coolant reservoir.
These are the pics, and believe could just loop/connect both black hoses with a short tail just above the engine or plug?? them at the block?
Want to double check before I screw something is working.

help with Westerbeke hoses to water heather

It would appear that someone went to a lot of trouble putting fittings in the hoses to do just as you describe, to bypass the water heater.
I’m almost positive that plugging would be fine, but most just put in a loop of hose, probably easier and I’m sure that works.

Re: help with Westerbeke hoses to water heather

It's more or less standard practice to install a secondary fill and expansion tank higher than the normal heat exchanger/ expansion tank if the house hot water heater is mounted higher than the standard expansion tank. Otherwise it is impossible to bleed all of the air out of the cooling system. If you remove the engine heated house hot water tank you can also despense with the extra expansion tank.

I would recommend removing the hose and hose fittings and plugging the outlets where the hot water exits and returns from the engine on the way to the house hot water heater. Normally the hot water is pulled from the flow near the thermostat, and returned into the suction side of the circ pump. If you just loop these hoses back on themselves you will be short circuiting the heat exchanger somewhat and might result in a heating problem.

great
thank you very much,I knew was something to do with the difference on levels but could not remember how, your explanation now reminds me and makes sense, gla I asked before touching any thing, something was telling me not to do it.
thank you very much, could have been a very costly mistake on an otherwise good running engine.
appreciate your time

Re: help with Westerbeke hoses to water heather

I have a Westerbeke 55c. It originally had those two hoses connected in a loop with a short piece of hose at the water pump. I installed a heater and ran it like the photos without the second expansion tank but the heater is lower than the existing tank.

In your top picture, Where the hose comes out of the water pump, Just put a small loop and join both of those hoses together in a short loop,4 inches long,
On both outlets, on the motor,

You should also have a valve just under the front panel that should have the original connections to the water heater,
Its just under the locker opening and in front of the engine,

I dont have 110 volts any more, So I just connected the heater direct to the motor and removed the heater coil,

Its the same motor as mine, Westerbeke 30 B,
Start your motor and keep an eye on the water in the engine, as it does get air locks,
Do it thru the radiator cap, not the overflow bottle,

Cheers, Brian,

Are you talking about the electric panel?

thank you Brian
was wandering, have to replace antifreeze twice and see a big bubble inside the tube I thought was a air lock!!!
thanks for the tip.

When you talk about that valve,do refer to the electric panel on the AC side?

Look down the front of the engine, The valve is against the front panel just under the opening,
You wont see it if you dont know its there, Its opposite your lower front engine pulley.

Re: help with Westerbeke hoses to water heather

You can plug off the fittings or loop.

Depending on the type of expansion tank cap, a second tank draws and delivers to the tank bottom. When the engine has been shut down and cooled off, if there is any air in the top of the main tank, it will be replaced by coolant from the 2nd tank. That way the engine coolant system is always air free.

On my boat, all the expansion tank relief ports go to a central tank. So I only have to look at one tank to see my engines have full coolant.
