Hard wearing single Fan Belts

Hello engine lovers

I need some advice; I'm looking for a brand and supplier of long wearing abrasive resistant V fan belts for a perkins 51 HP. 202 c22 engine.(like the volvo 51 HP which is a perkins engine with a volvo branding)

Problem; Because of low hours engine running time the pulleys end up with a rusted coated surface. This in turn wears out your general over the counter auto store fan belts as the pulleys endup like fine sand paper.

Normally they need readjusting every 25 hours of so because of belt wear. I had removed my alternator steel pulley and turned up an alloy one that has helped some what. However the engine pulleys are to difficult to change. I’m looking to solve the problem in the hope there is a high quality wear resistant alternative V fan belt high quality brand and supplier to solve this problem. that one of you may know of

Most belts I used come from Mexico or China and have a very short life in the marine world.

I look forward to any suggestions, many thanks in advance.

I searched high and low for a good quality belt the right size and length. Couldn't find one in Florida, MX or Belize. Ended up getting one from a street side store in down town Fronteras, Guatemala, go figure. I think it's a Gates.

150 amp alternator, single belt.
Used a automotive belt from NAPA, but slightly wider than the pulleys and "ribbed".
It would wear to be flush with the pulleys and worked much better than the previous slick belts.
Very little wear, no noise.

Gates "Green Stripe" belts. Some NAPA belts are Gates "Green Stripe" belts.

I agree with JCapo. Napa offered Green Strip Gates. So far, much better on my dual pulleys Detroit 453 with high output alternator.

Just a reminder to buy in matched set belts if multiple belts are used.

I've found Gates Green Stripe to be good and the Dayco Top Cog the best in a belt slippage situation I was trying to solve. If you have a a high amp alternator you will get wear though. Just the nature of the beast.

Go to the Gates website. You will find they make about 4 different grades of belts. There is a huge difference between hi and low grade belts.

The place to go for belts is an industrial supplier. Buy the highest grade belt they offer in your size. Cogged belts are spec'd with an "X" added to the belt, ie an A size belt is spec'd AX with the cogging. They are a better design.

Many thanks. I will try both Gates Green strip and Dayco Top Cog, and see which of the two gives the best belt life.

Suggest OP measure the width of all of his pulley grooves.On my Volvo 2003,I tried replacing the OEM VP belt with Gates A series.The A series are 1/2" IIRC & the OEM VP is slightly less width. I got the "twin ridge" after very little running,because the A belt is too wide for at least one of the pulleys.Got a lot of black rubber dust all over everything too.
Had to go back to OEM,but they last very well.
Just something to watch for.

Are you 110% certain that your pulleys are all the
Size (section) my new engines were supplied new
with different sized pulleys it took me years to
find out why the belts got chewed up & left black
stuff all over the engine bay.
Now that is fixed no more issues with belts

I've found opti-belts good a reasonably long life, correct adjustment helps.

Had black dust all over my engine compartment until some truck mechanic told me the pulleys were not aligned properly.
Quick fix, good results, no more black dust.

There are Kevlar belts available.

I tried them, but after two in succession failed, I discovered what I should have been told by the NAPA dealer: there is a minimum sheave diameter that Kevlar belts can operate on. Mine were too small.
