Discontinued MD17D Cooling Pump YIKES

So we're motor sailing in light winds at the end of LI Sound and the engine overheats and we kill the engine and have a look. Pulley came right off of the circulating pump on the 30 yr old MD17D. We get towed in to a dock and begin searching for the part. No one stocks it... at least all the places I was able reach.

No engine cooling. We're screwed. What to do?

Can these things be rebuilt? Can one find the part somewhere? How long does this take typically? Can a separate electric circulating pump be used... even temporarily?

Pulley seems to have an eccentric hole now so if it is to be re used a bushing needs to be inserted and aligned I suppose... and may be with a set screw not a press fit???

Suggestions or comments...

Re: Discontinued MD17D Cooling Pump YIKES

Went through all this about 9 years ago.... back then I was able to source replacement pumps in Chile (2), Finland (1), UK ( Keyparts.... v good )(1) , and Australia (2). All kept failing almost right out of the box... best was 50 hours.... all exchanged under warranty except the last one which was rebuilt in a local pump shop at a Volvo dealer's expense. Problem was rubber seal failure.
The original one had self destructed ( bearing failure) and was not rebuildable.... try shopping around O/S and if that doesn't work look for one at a wreckers and have it rebuilt.
Good luck...

Discontinued MD17D Cooling Pump YIKES

I have a VP MD17c. I don't know the difference between the c and d versions. A PO had installed an external non-Volvo pump. I can get details off the pump tomorrow.

Apparently the last pump available in the USA from the source who carry old Volvo parts arrived. In removing the old pump...one of the two bent pipes broke...and now that is on order...
stay tuned.

Re: Discontinued MD17D Cooling Pump YIKES

I will be suprised if the rubber in your 'new' one isn't shot.... these spare parts are all 30 yo now.... that said mine was fixed by a local pump shop... same people who did my lift pump... another thing to keep a handy spare for.
On the good side the impellor is ceramic(?) so fixing an old FW pump should just be seals and bearings.

Those push fit dedicated Volvo pipes are a bugger of a thing, do you have the Vovlo heat exchanger on the back of the engine? I have a 3rd party one on the adjacent bulkhead.

These engines can also be plumbed for raw water cooling.... main issue then is just that you need a shorter alternator belt.

I hear you about ancient spares. All I can do is put it on and see what happens and go from there...The mechanic told me that marine engines don't die... they simply outlive the availability of spare/replacement parts.

Re: Discontinued MD17D Cooling Pump YIKES

If you bought it from a dealer it should be under warranty... most of my 6 replacements were... but as you will only have the same problem with another one if you find one I would suggest laying it on the dealership that they should send it out to a pump shop.... that is pretty much what happened with mine in the end.

I'm pretty sure Volvo and other dealerships don't fix pumps in house... they send them out to specialist shops..

Good luck.

Re: Discontinued MD17D Cooling Pump YIKES

Unfortunately the pump being discused in that link is the water pump">raw water pump on the back of the engine although the plumbing description in post #1 makes not a lot of sense.

We are talking here about the FW circ pump on the front of the engine, alternator belt driven. It can be seen here with a 'Yanmar Grey' pulley... to take the curse off it....

The circulating pump is somewhat like a VP2003 pump.
I don't know if you could make a VP 2003 pump work as a replacement. Used ones show up on ebay US & ebay UK occasionally.
