Cleaning Air Breather - Yanmar 3gm30f

I've had some strange oil leaks popping up recently. Just minor drips coming out of bolts around the manifold cover. I'm led to believe this is either a clogged air breather or cylinder blowby. I'm having the compression tested this week, but want to clean the breather out to check that off the list.

Is there a method for doing this or is it just a matter of taking off the bolts, removing the unit, and cleaning? I notice in the service manual there's a gasket. Good chance I'll need to replace this in the process? The service manual doesn't go into any detail regarding removal, so I assume it's not a delicate procedure.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Cleaning Air Breather - Yanmar 3gm30f

hi Ryan,

our 3gm30f air cleaner just has two spring clips holding the cover housing which contains the air filter element, it is just a conical foam and wire filter and we have replaced ours once in 4 years, as the foam degrades and starts to fall apart; I can't imagine it could clog to the point of restricting airflow before it would just self destruct and be inhaled by the engine....??

fair winds,

George

Kind thanks for the response George. But sorry, I should've articulated better. I was referring to the "breather" as its officially called in the manual, which sits right atop and to the rear of the cylinder head.

I believe there is just a little foam block in the breather. If you take the top off you should be able to check if it is dirty and blocking the breather tube.

Hi all
Does anyone have filter replacement / alternative brand and part numbers for yanmar 3GM30? Also are there zinc anode aftermarket parts for the SD 20 saildrives? I recently bought a set from the yanmar dealer and am still boggling at: $50 for a water pump impellor , $18 for a fuel filter , $28 for an oil filter , and the big stinger ..$150 per SD anode .. all of this times x 2 ..

Re: Cleaning Air Breather - Yanmar 3gm30f

While it could be a clogged filter or orifice where the hose connects to the intake manifold (its a tiny hole in a bronze part then unscrews from the manifold) My yanmar 3gm30F started leaking around the valve cover bolts in 2013. My problem turned out to be broken rings.

My 2013 summer of discontent was documented below:

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ar-107705.html

Is your engine hard to start???. Is it hard to start when hot? Is there oil loss after only a few hours running.

Take the oil fill cap off while the engine is idling. If you get lots of grey smoke/oil mist out of the opening, it could be time for some hands on bonding. It could also be a blown head gasket, which would make you very lucky.

Some early 90's yanmars had issues with ring land failures. On the plus side, for the brave DIY or slightly crazy blondes, the cost for the repair can be done for about $1000, parts and machining, if you do it yourself.

If your engine starts easy, its probably NOT rings. But if the hose and orifice and filter in the breather are clear and you see gray smoke and /or your engine is hard starting, then it could be broken ring issue.

Oddly enough, once my engine started it did not smoke out the exhaust and ran ok. It did use a quart of oil every 12-16 hours though.

Best of luck to you.

Jabsco 22799-0001 is the OEM number for the 3gm30F (and 2gm20F) impeller, least wise for the US market. I hear that the EU GM's used an impeller with a pin through it. The Jabsco # above is for the flat sided shaft, not the slotted shaft.

For your anodes, check Anodes online. They have anodes for my pentas for 1/4 the price I can get genuine volvo ones.

Shufti and Sailorchic

Thanks very much for your help.. Beware the OEM retailers .. !!

The upside of the expensive service parts was a great weekend on the water

If I were to go to a replacement filter, I'd look real hard an a K&N cone type. Should fit right on, all it would need is a hole to stick the breather tube into, plus they are a real filter and are washable and re-useable, just use the genuine K&N oil, available most auto parts stores.

For the air filter elements I went to UniFilter. From the badly degraded foam sample and the metal form they supplied me 2 replacements for $10 each. They are marked CF0327, presumably a standard part number.

For the oil filters, I went to a truckies accessories place and bought Fleetguard LF3692 at about $12 each. They were originally going to sell me a different one, but when I asked them to compare the bypass valve pressures in the catalogue with the Yanmar filter they said this one matched.

For the SD20 oil seals I went to a bearing specialist with a sample and they were $5 each - make sure they have a stainless coil inside.

For the SD20 anodes I went to a Yanmar dealer because I wanted the conversion kit to convert from split anodes to single rings. The 2 kits with anodes were about $90 each - not sure why you got charged so much more.

For the seawater pump, as noted by Sailorchic34, there are two different models (maybe more). My boat has different pumps port and starboard. I believe the impeller with a rod through the centre is a Jabsco 810B. My other pump impeller is identical in size but has a keyway drive. I could not find an aftermarket one and had to pay Yanmar over $80 each.

Another aftermarket tip: The cooling hose from the raw water pump to the heat exchanger blew recently on a Friday before a long weekend. The Yanmar dealer said it would probably take a week to arrive as he would not be able to place the order until Tuesday. As I was travelling up the coast and didn't want to wait, I went to Supercheap auto with my sample with convoluted bends. The part CH1686 an almost perfect match (cut part off each end as needed). It's a heater hose to suit a VN/VP 5.0 Commodore. Note that I would only recommend this to get you out of trouble as the quality is far below the Yanmar one.

A minor correction .... I meant the other way around. The split anodes are supposedly the improved versions.

It was the split anodes which were put on mine.. It'll be interesting to see how long they last?
