I figure that I'm a bit under twice that. The FP "Lightship displacement of standard boat" is 8,600 kg for the Belize, I doubt that we are carrying more than another 3000 kg.

(The FP specified "full load displacement" is 11,500 kg)

I think the "even less" is definitely correct. A Lagoon 440 in cruising trim would be more like 15 tonnes or more. (13,500 kg design {lightship?})

According to the factory Manual , the L440's lightship displacement is 12150kg, with a max displacement of 18050. You're probably not far off the mark at 15 tonnes in cruising mode.

I had a travel lift operator tell me 13,500kg.....I questioned the accuracy of his machine and he shrugged his shoulders.

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

We recently had the travel lift op tell us 34000lb, 15400kg. Didn't question the accuracy. Supposedly we are 10.5t displacement with 3.5t payload. No way do we have 3+ tonne of cruising gear, fuel and water.

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

At our multihull only club in Toronto we hire a state of the art 180 capacity crane. The operator is happy with the accuracy of the scales . Leopard 43, 32000 lbs . and yes the lifting gear is subtracted. The owner for reasons I don't understand hauled with full tanks but it does not have all the cruising gear .He also has a a center console rib with a 50 hp honda (not included in the weight)
As much as I hate to say it he cannot get out of his own way.

How far below the water is his bootstripe?

Multihull Dynamics gives the Leopard 43 displacement at just under 20,000 lbs

12,000 lb (5,500 Kg?) is a heck of a load.

He is very low ,washer dryer ,40 inch flat screen in cockpit that sort of thing.

when our boat was in the slings it weighed about what it always had so I don't think the scale was to far off

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

one can crosscheck, at least roughly, weight by looking at immersion. For my boat, go to Lagoon web page and look at the mooring pics.

Here is assumption that this boat weighted lightship at say around 11T as it was on show and performance required to be as good as possible. Lightweight 10.5t

Each cm extra immersion is around 300 kg for mine. This is calculated as area at the water level boat occupies times, which i estimate 30m2, multipied by 1 cm. Each m2 area and 1cmheight, weights 10kg, tehrefore total 300kg.

In case I am 4 T more than demo boat, I expect immersion compared to the pic to be extra 13.3 cm.
As mold is identical, one can precisely determine distance from round bow, and/or stern shape down to couple 100 kilos error. looking at it now, i estimate immersion to be extra 5 cm therefore weight should be right now around 12.5t. This makes sense as I have nearly full water and fuel tanks & coastal cruising gear.

Polux,

Please state your experience sailing catamarans, include make, model, size, and how far you sailed.
Since then, silence...

Re: Why Do Catamarans Motor Nearly 100%

We just finished BVI to Ensenada. We sailed 99% of the time in Atlantic. Love the trades. Then maybe 20% of the time up to Cabo. And under 10% up Baja. For us it was about VMG, as we wanted to get the boat home and north in weather windows. Hard to sail fast in 3-5 on the nose. But ideal for motoring at 6-7.

Those sort of conditions I pretty much have to stay at the helm to avoid losing my breakfast. The wind ranged from 30 -50 AWA so we were close hauled most of the way with a reef in the jib and main. Once into deep water things things settled down and I always love the flat water behind the islands arrivals with good wind. It was only 20 odd miles and took around 3hrs with SOG ranging 6.5-8.5kn. We left at the same time as this little boat, which I didn't think we would see for dust. She also had a reef in the main although by her angle of heel at up to 45 degrees I think she may have preferred another reef at times. We arrive at exactly the same time as well and she tacked up the channel as we anchored outside. I was a bit surprised her angle hard on the wind was the same as ours, but then I think she is more a DW speed machine by her design.
The good news - I didn't see any yachts motoring in either direction 😀

Nice picture of Nikki Curwen on her minitransat 6.5 meter. She finished a respectable midfleet in the prototype division, about 5 days behind the leader. You have a big waterline advantage near upwind, but she will blow your doors off going DW when she starts to plane.
