Where to Sail in September through January

Any suggested cruising grounds for September through January 1st? My fiance and I are looking for some coastal cruising and island hopping. Due to our work schedule, we can't go at any other time. We're looking for nothing too difficult or blue water - basically anywhere in the world where the weather is good and the winds are favorable that time of year. Suggestions?

Re: Where to sail in September through January

I'm assuming you're thinking charter.

September through October could be real good in the Whitsundays (Qld, OZ).

Having gone through the same exercise New Zealand looks good. I even "found" a charter outfit that didn't make my eyes water.

If considering Oz/Kiwiland do note that they go absolutely bananas over Christmas/New Year so late December/early January are usually totally chockers.

Though I'd expect that if you have some flexibility with time, and are able to read a weather forecast that something closer to home would be a lot cheaper. Just don't plonk your money down until just before you're about to step onto the boat...

Phuket, Thailand (including Pang Nga Bay and the Andaman Sea). You can sail year round, although some months are better than others. Tons of islands to explore and well protected from nasty weather.

Re: Where to Sail in September through January

You cannot do the whole period but September and October in Croatia are fantastic. The crowds dissapear, its still hot/warm and the water is warm. We sail there early in April and late Sep/Oct. If you want to visit Korcula, Dubrovnic, Zadar, Split etc you will definitely get berths whereas in the season its a scramble. The only disadvantages out of seasona re that a lot of buoys/lazylines get removed, many restaurant close and you may not find a harbourmaster to pay!

Re: Where to Sail in September through January

We sailed in the Chessy all the way through December this year. There were a few days that we stayed sheltered in a cove or a marina....but that is only because I refuse to sail in anything greater than a sweat shirt! But being from Boston.....it probably would have felt like spring for you!

The fall winds make for some great sailing on the bay.

On top of that.....this is the best time for striper fishing! ... if you are into that.

G'day, Mate. Might want to give New Zealand some thought. The islands of the Hauraki Gulf over to the Great Barrier Island and then the coastline up to Mangonui. I'm sure the local charter boat companies would love to talk to you. All the best. Cheers.

Hi Cristina and welcome to the forum! How long have you and Pieter been chartering out of Brazil?

Re: Where to Sail in September through January

Pieter has almost three years experience in charters. I joined him now on january 2012. What do you know about charter in Caribbean? Little I heard of some clients or friends that we will gonna stay there forever ... ... even or without chartering. Well, here we go...

Re: Where to Sail in September through January

Cristina, I don't know anything about crewed charters in the Caribbean (or about sailing in Brazil), but glad to hear that you are enjoying and committed to the experience. I (and I suspect others) would love to hear more about your experiences in general, as well as concerning Brazil in particular.

Re: Where to Sail in September through January

Don't know if you are looking for something more exotic, but the Channel Islands in Southern California are beautifull and almost deserted that time of year. You won't find a cat to charter but there are several nice mono's available. If you are after solitude, wildlife and natural beauty it could be an affordable option.

And I forgot, if you want to know more about sailing on Brazilian coast we have some tips of Pieter, as a experienced sailor, about piers, marines, yacht clubs, weather conditions, price$, etc.
