Re: Ultimate Trimaran Cruising Boat (IMHO)
If the guidelines are for a "dream" tri with no other considerations, than I would want an updated version of Erik Lerouge's PULSAR 50 cruiser-racer.

Re: Ultimate Trimaran Cruising Boat (IMHO)
Tony Grainger has recently released a 20m cruising trimaran design:
https://www.graingerdesigns.net/trim...s-20-trimaran/
Looks to be an offering for those who are looking at more the Rapido end of the market?

Cool boat, but I wonder how you see where you're going? At the speeds that boat would attain, visibility at the helms look scary bad!

The wheelstations do look like a dropped in well that's too low. Where do you lock it up when you leave it? Or could you find some local cooking up a feast when you return to her?

Why was a foam core fibreglass boat a requirement of yours? Just curious.'

I think most modern multihull boats are foam core. Would be harder to find one that isn't.

Ultimate Trimaran Cruising Boat (IMHO)
I can't comment on production boats but I know of three multi designers that recommend balsa and a lot of their boats are.
I realise it's not everyone's cup of tea, of course

i am sure that we have learned a lot about foam core construction in the last thirty years, but Captaingregger was looking for a Horstmann made from foam core. The older foam core trimarans - were they as well built as the newer ones? i fear for stress cracking on the crossbeams and elsewhere on the older foam core boats. In addition, the possibility of delamination occurring between the foam and the skins is worrying. My wife and i will be going to visit a foam core tri later in October, and these questions burn in my head.

Re: Ultimate Trimaran Cruising Boat (IMHO)
First thing you'll notice is the beams will be ply and timber. Much stronger and fatigue resistant but look for rot and wood quality. Was it marine ply or construction grade? Beams should be marine. Look for flex cracking in the glass skins where they meet the beams as this can let in water.
The resin on these will be polyester on the fiberglass. If you run your hands over every square foot you should be able to feel if it has lifted from the core. It will take awhile.

Thanks Cavalier. Its good to know that the crossbeams would be wood. There is wood for the stem to make an anchor point for the headstay, and i see wooden beams for the cabin roof. The after part of the coach roof is ply core to make mounting the winches stronger. If i remember correctly the float decks are also ply core. i know that its difficult to describe a feeling, but what should i feel for? Listen for?

Re: Ultimate Trimaran Cruising Boat (IMHO)
Well you are literally feeling for a air gap between the glass skin and core. For example if you press on the skin and it moves a bit before it feels solid and looks like it lifts when you let go you'll know you have some separation. This isn't to be confused with normal panel deflection on a deck for instance.
