I noticed the newspaper article said that he had a vacant lot waiting for him in the shadow of Diamond Head. There are no haulout facilities there and any lot large enough to be a boat building facility would be over a million dollars. Mostly high end hotel, restaurant, the Elks Club and Waikiki and old residential homes and condos.

Its sad but true, that it isn't sufficient to just dream about sailing around the world to actually do it. Training is required to be successful.

From the picture earlier in the posting, I think that I would call this a houseboat, not a catamaran. You can not expect to present all that surface to the wind and the waves even just off the coast. Too bad it is lost. It would make a nice (if rather ugly) home on a lake. With a patio on the roof, it could be a comfortable inland home.

I pray you do not judge all self designed catamarans on the fate of this one. Did the designer have any engineering knowledge. The information to calculate what it should have been constructed like it available in books and on the WEB. "Elements of Boat Strength" by Dave Geer springs to mind. Combined with others and tools like Engineering Toolbox on the WEB, it is possible to construct something that would be appropriate for coastal cruising. There is a reason that boats look like they do. If it doesn't look like other boats then you can expect problems in your design. Others have tackled these problems before us--and their solutions, not so oddly, come out looking the same way. It just works out that way.

I am particularly struck by the back-stays tied to that flat roof in the back. Was that supposed to work? Lots of stress. 65 feet is lot to self design. How many bedrooms did this thing have?

From what I bought last year, it has to be a minimum of 20 to 25 thousand dollars in half inch in marine plywood alone (it was probably at least 3/4 inch--or doubled 1/2 inch, maybe). I spent $6000 for two full units (plus sales tax) for my 48 footer (the design has grown from 44 to 48 feet to make it 'look right' and properly carry the weight (with the balance needed after this forum pointed out that double-ended is safer for coastal cruising). I may even have to buy more to complete my own smaller design. (a unit of 1/2 inch is 60 sheets)

The FH was built with standard construction grade lumber. CDX plywood and 2x4s. That's why it was (in)famous before it was even launched. It's all in the other thread. Pics too!

I should note that there was a front moving through the area before the FH had issues. Nothing major, 15 gusting 25-30 ish. Woke me up at anchor at 4 am in the SF bay. Practically calm for the west coast.

I expect there was a wee bit of flexing in the hulls which probably opened a seam. Pity, the boat would have been a nice river barge.
