It's a new handicap rating formula. You get an extra 2 seconds per mile when you've got the BBQ lid open.

Fleet appears to be bunching up with the back of the pack getting maybe better winds. The Catana's lead is now 3 miles ahead of the larger Lagoon, looks like an excellent year ....so far!

Yep still ok winds at the back of the fleet and the very front (race leader mono still getting 12 knots boat speed - great tactics). I reckon that lagoon in 2nd spot is motoring though... 6.8 knots into a 5 knot headwind (if you believe the gribs) vs catana looks to be still sailing

Agree there especially so large a boat, i guess at the end of the day most participants use the race as a method of safe transit. We sit here watching and comparing but in reality they really want to get there ASAP(i'm not talking of the racers of course).
Intermixed with all ocean crossings is, Weather routes chosen or accidentally come across, breakages and abilities of boat and crew.

A Catana well sailed should beat the fleet and the big Prout should come in second (the multi's of course) i think Roelff will give them a run for the money i think he is fairly dedicated to sailing/competition.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but with boats starting to finish, there's not a single catamaran on the ARC leaderboard ...?

You are absolutely correct the race boats, the 60+ footers are coming in, the cruising cats are on there way, kid's mums and dads all having a ball with the rest of the cruising fraternity.
The Racers and big boats always at the front...

The only cruising boats to finish so far are the invitiation class ie 60 foot plus so yeah I guess the 43 foot catana has been beaten to the finish by a few monos twice her length....

All racers had a 2 day head start this year also (which didnt include any cats).

It looks to me that the only non invitational cruising boats in front of the 2 leading cats is a swan 48 that started with the racing fleet and a hanse 53 thats neck and neck with em.

Yep it looks like being a pretty quick passage for most of the cats. Heres hoping we get something similar next year....

Seven cruising monos finished so far, Swan 48 coming in, X-65 next, Lagoon 560 followed closely by 3 monos (all four seeing each other), Catana is 20nm behind about the same distance to finish as Oyster north of her. My favourite now 14th in all cruising 60nm behind them.
Can't see any big the difference btw 50'-65'mono or 40'-56'cat.. about the same price tag, speed and room. For me (if I had the dough ) for tropics it would be a cat and for higher lat a big mono... but thats me..

True, however a lot of the race boats are crewed with race crew, i think i counted ten young bucks on one of them, sure beats the family crossing.

Delete any in front who don't have a dinghy on davits!!!! LOL

Overall, it was a good, fast passage. Finish times ranged from 14 to 17 days for the cats which didn't have problems or divert, which isn't bad at all for the course length of 2860 miles. That's 170 to almost 200 miles/day AVERAGE.

The Catana 43 finished behind the first Lagoon 560, and reported motoring 14.5 hours vs 12 for the Lagoon. It would be interesting to know the handicap basis for the cats, as the Catana had about the same rating as a Lagoon 450...

Comparing the times to the cruising monohulls is a bit trickier, but the 50th percentile cat had about the same corrected time (18.5 days) as the 50th percentile mono, which means the handicap system worked pretty well. Based on the assigned handicaps, the Catana corrected out first place in the multi's and 11th place in the monos, which is in the top 6% overall.

The boats in the ARC are generally more fully crewed and pushed harder than the average cruising boat. I would estimate that you should reduce the average speeds by about 10% for similar boats which are doublehanded by a cruising couple. The rally is almost all downwind in the trades--you could more than double the passage times if they went the other direction.
