I'm not quite sure what the Captain can say to justify leaving on the weather information available to her. If I guessed, the decision was based on someones perceived schedule -

dumb question why do they not make a air bag that can be pulled up the main so if a cat turns over the air bag will inflate and at least keep the boat on it's side not totally upside down then maybe with a little help from another boat the over turned boat could be righted just my dumb thought as i would easily make an air bladder that would inflate on contact with the water keeping the mast at least level with the water and making it easier to right up later will this not work

They do ... on Hobie cats. A Cruising Cat weighs too much, the rigging would fail, or the mast would bend /break.

There are a lot of mono's that would have rolled 360 in those conditions, they don't always float afterwards. The departure point reported many boats making unscheduled stops. Cat's have bad captains too. Captains make bad decisions based on some 'necessity' to get to work on Monday morning, the better ones know how to sail through a storm, but a freak wave can be a big breaker that rolls mono's routinely, and Cats sometimes. The crew survival was down to having a boat to stay with, and being able to hang on to it inspite of neither the boat nor crew being prepared for an inversion.
