Modernizing a Prout Elite 37ft

and todays progerss,,actually day 6 of work,since we arrivewd here last week tuesday at 11pm!

i could actually sail out of here now!

but thought it might be a good idea to put a few more bulkheads in!
so cut out the main aft bulkheads.
a lot of ply wood flying around today got through 6 sheets of 12 mm!

added some seat backs in the saloon,and the frames for the stairs, the boat is a lot more stiffer now will tab in all the bulkheads once i have finished cutting and positioing.
still need another 6 sheets of ply to finish the basic interiour framework,so that will be 10 of 20 sheets i have got through so far!

and a pair of jeans!

Loos good! 12mm ply Is pretty heavy stuff though, do you need that much? Some of it looks like it's just furniture, maybe something lighter would do the job?

We've actually found some balsa cored plywood. Quite cheap, reasonably light, and perfectly adequate for furniture.

yeah this is all tempory screwed and bolted to gether and tabbed to the hull so i can sail it down to cornwall,350 miles,but can be a rough trip,so the hull needs a certain amount of stiffness other wise i risk getting stress crazing in the gel coat where the ama's meet the bridgedeck.

i will probably fabricate foam cored gelcoated grp panels for a lot of the interiour surfaces,bulkheads and furniture.

progress day 7 and 8,

hull cleaning up nicely,gelcoat is like brand new!

floors in amas

transeverse bulkhead in fwd section.

batteries inside,awaiting boxing,will double up as the nav table ontop.

There sure is a difference in completing a project for yourself than having someone doing it for you. An amazing amount of work you have done in such a short time. Hopefully your 350km trip will be as effortless as you have made the transformation from hull and deck appear. When I was younger 12 and 14 hours a day were normal on a project. NOW if I can get 3 or 4 hours a day I am doing good. Fair winds and thanks for sharing your project.

it really does make great bedtime reading,and is moral boosting,as i collapse into my makeshift bunk!

it has also occured to me that,although making tempory panels,furniture and bulk heads,etc is a lot of work( that will have to be unbolted,unscrewed and dis-assembled).

it will give me a full set of fairly accurate templates that could in theory be re-assembled in the workshop for the next stage of fabrication,

where i intend to modularise and make up light weight grp moldings for a lot of the interiour spaces.

this can all be done over the winter in the warmth and controlled conditions in my workshop.

one thing prouts are renowned for is being heavy!

which is quite understandable when you see the plans which stipulate a fairly solid interiour using 18mm,12mm and 9mm plywood.

at the time ,1987 -91 these cats were being sold in kit form aimed at the ameuter home builder,so exotic,composite's were still being experimented for race boats,and not as common as today.

using prefabricated exotics and epoxy,and without compromising the structural integrity i belive i can significantly reduce the weight of the completed vessel once i get it down to its home berth,and start the new build in ernest........
that is in between refitting and selling the 3 other boats i have currently!

Sounds as if you could use flat panel resin infusion for all those panel for the lightest construction. KSS system.

yes the boat needs insulation as well for this climate,most of the deck and coach roof are allready baLsa cored,but would like to add,20mm polyeurathane foam throughout,
toying with the idea of prefabing faced gelcoated panels,backed with poly-foam,then vacuming/infusing them in place direct to inner grp skin.
