La Vagabonde tri-sail setup. Is this common?

So, on one of the La Vagabonde episodes, they are on a close reach in light winds and put up their main, jib, and code 0 simultaneously. Is this common? Does the jib not inhibit the high pressure side of the code 0?

Wouldn't that behave just like a cutter does, where the jib and stay'sl turbocharge the main? When close reaching on my cutter, that sail setup is great!

Good question, cause I don't know any better
It may help shape the slot like a Staysail and a Genoa, if there is enough separation between the two?
My best answer would be try it and see.
I have not yet flown a code zero, but assumed I would fly it with my Staysail

Here's a short vid of my cat on a VERY light air day.

Main is sheeted close to center, jib out a bit, and screacher out further.

3 sheets to the wind, even though very light was working well:

Re: La Vagabonde tri-sail setup. Is this common?

Double headsails have been the norm for quite a long time, regardless of the sail's names. As to how efficacious it is, it depends on a number of factors. But it usually does boost speed, albeit how much again depends on a number of factors.
TWS
AWS
TWA
AWA
Boat Speed
Tack Placements
Cut of Sails
Height of inner jib
Sheet block positions
Plus a number of others gone missing from my brain due to undercaffeination

But if you think about it, done right, meaning with 2 "mains" of significant size & decent seperation, ketch's rock when it comes to reaching. Look at Steinlager 2, Maria Cha IV (?), or the Dashew's designs.

Yes, assuming they can amass enough righting moment to carry sail equal to a ketch of the same size/sail area, a sloop's generally faster. But that kind of Rm can be tough to come by, as well as expensive from a sail & hardware POV. And this assumes that the fore sails on the sloop aren't overly in the lee of the main.

Think lower center of effort for a given amount of sail area, if a split rig, & proper wind angles.

They are in the Balerics last I heard, nearly zero wind most of the the time, at this time of year.

Great video example. I'm excited to try this soon. Also, one of the few times where vertical video is acceptable and even necessary!

Re: La Vagabonde tri-sail setup. Is this common?

most small yachts will sail upwind on headsails alone / with multiple headsails it is important to have a reasonable air gap between the sails / with our boat we run 3 headsails with an even gap between the sails / we furl one headsail and reef the main to suit / sometimes furl 2 headsails and reef the main twice to suit / the staysail stops air loss between number 1 and the main / usually makes 1 knot difference upwind with number1 headsail and number 3 headsail with full main up / we watched wild oats sailing at unknown hull speed with reefed main gigantic number1 and a staysail / the boat appeared to be working hard the sails looked like they were painted on and set firmly against the wind / try it for yourself and take note of your hull speed / 1 - 1.5 knots makes a big difference over 24hrs or so

Yep, running my Genoa together with the screacher in light winds is worth 0.5-1kt of boatspeed when the overall boat speed is <10kt. The furled Genoa would act as a drag anyway, so why not unfurl?
