Re: Galley Position

Galley down if you're living aboard. Galley up if you're chartering.
As a liveaboard, I enjoy spreading out and getting into my sweet spot for reading, dozing and relaxing. Tough to do when you're sharing space with a galley in your living room.

Re: Galley Position

Galley up, if near the center of the boat, has much less movement aboard a cat underway. A consideration if you plan to cook underway.

Re: Galley Position

We have galley up in our Broadblue 415 and would not have it any other way. We have plenty of space and only have to go to the larder downstairs for major ingredients as we have enough storage for all the little stuff in the galley itself.

I can stand at the galley and make tea or soup or a meal and still keep watch, day or night which gives me great peace of mind as we are punctilious about keeping watch. The galley also serves as a great place to stand when its peeing down and we want a chat as we can talk across the saloon and still keep watch. Not to mention when you have guests on board - its waay easier to serve dinner on one level since we do not have a butler in our crew

I may be wrong, but a galley down in the same fore aft position would have less motion in a seaway than the galley up.

Re: Galley Position

Never owned a cat ! but it seems to me if we can cook at sea in a mono hull, you sure would not have a problem with a down galley in a cat !! Much less motion there then we have in our mono hull!! and the larger main cabin area would be a great thing to us ! just a few thoughts from Mono hull sailors! anytime ya have more room in a galley just makes it better !!

Re: Galley Position

Love the galley up on our Lagoon 380. Keeps everyone on the same playing field but I have noticed the Lagoon may have more room in the bridge deck cabin than a lot of other similar sized cats

Re: Galley Position

Cooking in a seaway? OK .....but...but.......buy an autopilot. 95% ... or more.. of almost every boat's life is spent at the dock or on the hook. When spending time aboard there are times that I like the idea of some space between me and the admiral (grin) especially when there's a game on. Guys...you all know what I'm talking about....

Galley Down!

Re: Galley Position

When I started looking at cat's, galley up was a must have. I ended up with a galley down and like it now. IMO, it's not a deal breaker either way. Lots of counter space for prep work is nice and a bar to make cocktails, that's really more important the the physical location of a stove and sink. With a galley down, you also typically will end up with a larger nav station.

Your absolutely correct, a centerline galley may have a better beam to beam motion but I've yet to see a galley on any cat in the center of the bridgedeck. The farther up you get from the waterline the more motion you will feel. We've had both galley up and down and honestly have no preference.

Re: Galley Position

no sure if I have a right to contribute: Living in a monohull and with no plans to buy a cat

When we visit friends on a cat for us "monos" the biggest cat avantages is the galley up. Cooking and living where things happen is just great. And just think where usual all the live happend when you still owned a house - it was most probably the open kitchen!
