Re: Cost of transom extensions for 39’ catamaran?

The ARC still provides valuable real world data.

It gives information on a large number of boats sailing the same route, at the same time.

If we drill down into the numbers, and eliminate the Class A boats, (which are not a reasonable comparison against a Lagoon 39), and eliminate the 2 fastest and 2 slowest boats in Class B, (to allow for perhaps gung-ho crew and mechanical problems), we are left with 11 FP and Lagoon catamarans of varying sizes, crew skill, hours of motoring, route choice, etc etc.

All of these boats finished within 44 hours of each other on actual time, with an even spread of arrival times over the 44 hours. After 18-20 days of sailing, there was less than 10% difference between all the boats.

Yes the Lagoon 39 was one of the boats to finish at the tail end of the 44 hours, but it was also one of the smallest. With at most only a 10% difference between it and much bigger boats,(Lagoon 50, FP Saba 50 etc), it is perhaps unreasonable to say the Lagoon 39 "sucks big time".

It may be accurate to say it doesn't suck big time in comparison to other fat heavy boats, but it does suck big time in comparison to many many cats.

Such as? I’ve looked at and sailed on “many, many cats.” My favorite by far was an old school Outremer 40/43. I particularly liked the view I had as I stood in the head with my head extending fully out the hatch. Sailed beautifully, but still a dog compared to my F31 tri. Anyone who thinks you can stay small—with all the benefits of small, not the least of which are initial cost and yearly maintenance—and have both comfort and performance don’t know what they are talking about.
