A second hand Hobie Cat in Craig's List will hit you for about a grand. Most areas have an active Hobie club or group. These people would take you sailing I am pretty sure, so you could get your feet wet. These folks usually work off of sandy beaches, and shun docks and slips. Go introduce yourself and get involved. They do look like a lot of fun.

Re: average price for a catermaran?

This being a "cruiser's forum", I think it is reasonable that people here will think of cruising catmarans. If that's not your interest, please be more specific.

A cruising catamaran is literally a 3 bedroom home, and as previously mentioned costs as much or more as such, depending on age.

If you're looking for a sport catamaran, mention the size, style, price range, purpose, etc that you are interested in.

Re: Average Price For A Catermaran?

From 1000 for an off the beach cat to 50k for a small cheap and "needs tlc" live aboard to 1 million. Its a very broad question.

Yeah, but I heard you can just make your own for a lot less by welding 2 monohulls to an upper deck!

A 14-foot mini-cruiser is minimalist. A 19ft is comfortable, and anything much larger than a 25 borders on ostentatious.

Where is this 50k live aboard?? If it's a Wharram, I'll consider that a weekender

Re: Average Price For A Catermaran?

When your buying a catamaran they're too expensive, when your selling one they're too cheap, in between is the average

Re: Average Price For A Catermaran?

Your question is similar to "what is the average price of a car?" The answer is probably not very useful unless you get a lot more specific. Start with defining what you want to do, daysail race or cruise, weekends aboard,..., circumnavigate? Look at yachtworld.com or boat.com to see what's on the market. You will soon realize (unless you are a person of means) that you cannot yet afford what you want to do. Then the question will be how frugal you are willing to be for how long before you can afford what you want. During this period, your perception of what you want to do with the boat will evolve, and your targe price will too. Good luck!
