Don't forget, for what he paid for his mono he can still afford to motor when he chooses. While we were in Australia a couple of weeks ago, we paid US$7.18/g (A$1.32/L) for petrol. Diesel was significantly higher. If you are having to use 2 motors to move the 'Dock Condo', I can see why you are so worried about motoring.

Sails are pretty and look cool on the water. But they are $%^& expensive. Add standing rigging costs, sheets and halyard costs, sail covers, all that messing around with ropes and then my cat (the furry, hairball type) tends to get seasick and well it just costs to much to sail.

Plus, like, the wind is always on the nose. Whats up with that anyway. Then when sailing, the boat tips over on it's side. Gee that's just crazy. Who would what to do that anyway. Crazy loons.

Personally, I motorsail a lot, especially when my GPS estimates an ETA that's favorable for my sundowner schedule!

yes it's all relative. Some days I can make great haste with the gib and the motor, some days not. One day the motor could only do 3 knts into the wind, so I tacked all day with no iron gib running. Then with full sails going down wind, we hit 9 a couple times (maybe not real 9 but gps 9)

I have had a monohull for several years and used to motor everywhere. Then somebody told me I could raise a sail in front and also one in the middle and it would save me fuel. How was I supposed to know about the sailing part?

I think the reason that most sailboats today motor is because their auxiliaries are too damn quiet and smooth. Nothing like a loud rattler to get those sails up. If you could hear/feel mine, you'd sail as much as possible. I'm starting to enjoy sailing at under 2kts.
Buy an old boat!

How do you know they are motoring? Maybe their hulls are so efficient they don't need to put the sails up.

I think of my sails as auxilary power. But i live in the PNW.

Funny thread. We motored so much we bought a trawler. I missed sailing so much I bought a 10' Bauer sailing dinghy. Bottom line is if you're on the water you're good.

These monohull vs catamaran threads remind me of the Star Trek episode where one of the aliens was white on the left side & black on the right side & the other alien was white on the right side & black on the left side. Or was it the other way around? No matter. The point is they were the only ones that noticed the difference.

My wife calls our Volvo 2-banger the African Queen.
Unfortunately, to get from our slip in Beautiful Downtown Wilmington CA to sailing space requires negotiating 4 miles of container ships, tugs, barges, and so forth which, contrary to what the COLREGS say, refuse to get out of our way.
But, after we get to Hurricane Gulch, raise the sails and kill the engine, it's all worth it.
