Why do monohulls have sails?

Why is it that nearly every time I see a monohull here in Australia, it's motoring from place to place? Even when the winds are favorable... they're under power. Before I built our cat we owned a monohull, and I really wanted to go cruising on it because it was so cheap, but the thing sailed horribly.

I see many, many monohulls around here, but nearly 100% of the time.... motoring, sometimes with sails raised. Why is that? Do they all sail that badly? Wouldn't sailing be preferable? Why not just buy a powerboat if all they do is motor?

Are the sails just used to reduce the awful rolling, or purely for decorative reasons?

If you were in the med you would see that there are quite a few yachts that do motor. I've never paid attention to the proportions mono/multi that do it, but at times there are a lot.

Clearly you must be bending bananas where you motor because in Melbourne almost everyone sails. There's no where top go, so no one is in a hurry unless they are in a race and if they are not in a race, they sail slowly away from their berth, turn around and sail slowly back.

Every Oyster I have ever seen has been motoring in good sailing conditions (this is actually true). Why do Oysters motor 100% of the time?

I am not sure why you think Australia has anything to do with that. Elsewhere, they are doing the same.

I think they call it cruising.

There are many forums on the web where you can look up these people and get an insight into their motoring minds ...

Hey, I sail when I can, I motor plenty, and motor/sail when it helps. What's the big deal. Yeah, cruising like mentioned above. We do way more sailing returning from the Bahamas, than we do going there. The reason is obvious. On the bright side, I burn 1/3 gal/hr on my mono, but can only make about 5.7 knots motoring.

Who cares what others do anyway, and it probably has little to do with what type of boat it is?

Curious why you sail more returning from the Bahamas than going there? Or are you talking about riding the Gulf Stream further North when leaving the Bahamas? I assume you are not returning to Texas. (sorry, it wasn't obvious to me).

BTW, from what I've seen, the fastest racing mono's motorsail everywhere too.

Easterly winds I imagine. Just beat into them myself to get to the Bahamas! Glad my mono doesn't have a real motor anymore 😜
