Thirdly, Im in Brisbane, and thats the easy part....Anyone know of a person in Melbourne who can handle my boat on thier property while I get it seaworthy?
Hi Tim , Not sure where the boat is in Melbourne , but there is an area near Tyabb on the Mornington Peninsula where many boats are built and worked on, we call it the field of broken dreams due to the number of abandoned projects, Your boat is large and depending on what stage its at could be 20 tn or more . in 2019 I moved my 15m , 15.5 tn boat from my house in Blairgowrie Vic , to the marina about 3km away , 220 tn crane $3000 , low loader $1700 , marina travel lift , 4 day hard stand and launch $1400 . Alan Martin used to be the local guy with the low loader , his son took over the business and moved my boat. Check with Yarringa Boat Harbour [near tyabb] for the storage /launch options , Craig at Superior Masts & Rigging will know the address for the field of broken dreams , he's a top bloke and can help with your rig , I built my steel boat from the bare sheets laying on the ground to fully completed. so know a few things if you need help. Cheers John

But then you have to find a yard where you can launch her.

Big project boats like this are usually very cheap for reasons like this.

Indeed, to move a yacht of this size by road you will need a special permit as well
He will be looking at about 15k to possibly 20k.

I payed 9000 to move a 36ft yacht from a farm to a marina for launching. Distance was about 20km.
That was in 2017

Moving this boat is doable - just problematic and expensive.

It reminded me of YachtRodney who in 2007 moved his 75', 75 ton 'new' ferro-cement 30 miles across Sydney to Botany Bay for launching. He had to cut it in half horizontally for transport and rejoin it launching - and it worked!

Re: Where to put a 20m steel yacht on the hardstand?

If this post is for real all this should have been worked out before the sale.
I doubt $20,000 will cover haulage and only if there is a Viable route to the sea considering road corners road widths cable heights etc closing down entire roads. The transporter is very limited in its manoeuvre capabilities.
I have done this exercise moving my Cat from inland to the sea, being in the mining industry I knew what to expect and had the contacts to fix it for me.
It was a big move and I was in remote WA?
So much more problematic in a city.
Yep cut her up for scrap.

Re: Where to put a 20m steel yacht on the hardstand?

Wotname I like your thinking. Just run a 8 inch grinder right down the middle or cut her into four 15 foot sections. I think that would be easier as with any luck you could divide her up into modules and not have to remove any fittings.
If you are worried about getting her all fair again, a paint job like this one below should distract from any imperfections........

Here's another
Maybe you have heard of your countryman Les Thompson.
Whom singlehandedly built "Llinase" a steel catamaran.

Re: Where to put a 20m steel yacht on the hardstand?

The irony of your post.

I was just 2 days ago looking at a Trombone trailer (At my local Ritchie Bros.{Worldwide }Auctions) that extends from 53 to 70 feet with the idea of using it as the base of a yacht transport trailer.

And then there is Doug from SV Seeker....
SO, You will see. Moving the boat isn't impossible by any means.
And it doesn't need to be crazy expensive.

Re: Where to put a 20m steel yacht on the hardstand?

Not sure what the regulations are in Australia for homebuilt boats.
But many have & are built there. So there is a process in place.
What are the specifics of Registering your project boat in Australia?
Insurance; If your local boat, yacht Insurance Broker is not interested.
What about approaching your Bank for a Loan or a Line of Credit to complete your boat.
During that process ask them about Builder's or Project Insurance.
Doesn't mean you have to take their money if you don't need to.
I suspect you would need some form of Liability & Loss Insurance.
Often the Banks of Financial Lenders require such a coverage.
Find non nautical sources of Insurance for boat projects on the hard.
No different than building a shed or renovating an RV.

Re: Where to put a 20m steel yacht on the hardstand?

Jeepers the I am not aware of any regulations for home built boats here in Australia. Building a shed or renovating a RV are way different from outfitting a yacht. The shed would have to be built to your local Council standards and the bank will have a rough idea of its worth once completed. Same with an RV, the bank will know the Blue Book value so they have an idea of its worth. But a home built yacht is an unknown and I have seen plenty of owners do their own fit out and actually devalue the boat instead of increase the value.
As for moving anything cheaply here in Australia it is my understanding if the trailer goes on a public road then it needs to be registered and roadworthy. Then when moving any wide load you have to have permits, escort vehicles and police involved and everyone of those wants to be paid. Depending on the vessels height you made need to involve the local power company to move some powerlines as well.
Les Thompson sounds like a legend and he must have had plenty of energy to complete a cat that size.
Cheers
