Ad a Compac i think its a 27 might work. I doubt you will find a Dana 24 or a Pacific Seacraft for under $10k.

I throw in Lindenberg 26 as an option. Have a friend that has one and have known two others that owned them also. Great little boats with way more space than you'd think based on the length. Our friend races his in the weekly buoy races and some nearshore 30-100 mile races. We've raced with him in some pretty heavy weather on Lake Superior. The boat is fantastic and actually competitive.

A Bristol 29 meets all of those requirements. I had one for 20 years. It's just a great boat.

Re: Under 29 Foot But Can Stand Up In The Cabin

I have a Ssan Juan 28 . LOA is 28.6, cabin head room is 6' +. All lines lead aft and I single hand it all the time. Draft, however, is a tad over 5' when fully liaded.

I have a Pearson 26 which is EXACTLY the boat you are looking for. Having said that, mine is not for sale at this time. It’s in New York on Champlain. But there are others around. And the asking price is usually under $5k. I would advise you do a search for one of these. Good luck.

Re: Under 29 Foot But Can Stand Up In The Cabin

I have brought several boats from the US into Canada. Lots of boats go the other direction as well. NAFTA, or whatever they call the treaty now, makes it duty free to bring boats made in the US or Canada back and forth. Sales taxes will still be charged, but you get credit for what you paid where you bought the boat, against any taxes assessed in the destination country.
You will have to declare the boat when you enter the US with it, and show all your paperwork: Bill of sale, tax receipts, etc.
How easy it is depends on the mood and attitude of the individual Customs agent, and the folks in the office where you do your paperwork.

Here in BC and Washington State, we avoid the main border crossings: Blaine or Sumas, for anything that will require us to 'go inside'. Equally difficult people on both sides. (I have crossed at those places hundreds of times, with no problems. It's when you have something a bit different that the agent gets to decide whether to be an antagonist or a helper)
Agents in smaller places tend to be more small town helpful. Around here, you won't get away with anything out of order in the smaller places, just more friendly service.

If you need skinny draft, <30 feet and 6 ft of headroom, what about a Southerly 28? Problem might be that there won't be one anywhere near the finger lakes.

I had great fun in a Paceship PY 26 shoal draft with centerboard. I believe there's a number of them in the Great Lakes. I sailed mine from Detroit to Puerto Rico and had a blast.

Watkins 27. Has lots of room but if you go a little bigger you could get a Downeast 32.
But lots of good 27 to 32 ft boats out there.
Good luck

I was reading through this thread, thinking the Sabre 28 was a slam dunk, and wondering why nobody mentioned it. We had a 1979 34-1, and while it is 6 ft longer it is a very similar boat. I enthusiastically recommend you look at a 28, which can often be had for very small money. Its big sister, the 30-footer, is only one foot above your target.

Re: Under 29 Foot But Can Stand Up In The Cabin

My Cal 2-27 had standing headroom. I think they stopped making them in like 1984 but there are quite a few still kicking it around, and some of them go pretty cheap. The 70's built ones usually had Atomic 4's but some have been repowered, especially the raw water cooled ones, the majority of them. A lot of Beta 10 and 12 engines replaced the old Atom Bombs. It was also a good boat for EP, from my own experience repowering mine. Later models often had Universal diesels in them, decent engines, freshwater cooled. Find one with a dead A-4 and you might pick it up for $1k to $3k. The vee berth is wider and more comfortable than the similar Catalina 27.

Re: Under 29 Foot But Can Stand Up In The Cabin

I have a Grampian 26 in my hayfield on a steel cradle, good shape but needs clean up. 3'9" draft good sails, good furler. But I'm in NS, PM me if interested. I'd like to see it find a good owner. They say 6' headroom but really 5'10".

Cheers, DR

What are you planning to do with this boat? Liveaboard, pocket cruising? That’s a helpful bit of info to provide.

Re: Under 29 Foot But Can Stand Up In The Cabin

Sounds like my boat! BY THE WAY, I am over 70 and always single hand (wife is not a sailor), unless racing of course! I am 5'11" and can easily stand up. Hits every item on your checklist.
