Thoughts on a 1962 Columbia 29

I do have the dinette version (though I took it out), but I don't have a post under the mast. We're fitting the beam around the bulkhead. If it doesn't appear to give enough support, we'll attach a knee to it, so the support is directly under the mast. I don't think it's going to occlude the passage much, but we'll have to get creative with the door that closes off the head. lol

Remove the door and put a curtain! less weight less complication

I may do just that. I love the mahogany doors, but it might be a real pain to put this one back in.

Yes, I will probably have to trim a bit off the tops of the doors too. But curtains, I'll have to think about that one! But then, what will catch all the stuff that falls in the head and hanging locker when I 'm sailing?

Nice cubby holes and latched doors will keep all your stuff from flying around!

Appick, the wooden bases will be painted with the deck, it's happening pretty soon if I don't find any more thing to repair or modify. I finally put together a blog post about it:

The electric drive is still out, it will go back in once the interior is painted and it should work when connected to the batteries. Finger crossed.

Well, I got her hauled out after Thanksgiving, and to my great disappointment, she has a bad case of Boat Pox. And if that wasn't bad enough, it appears someone had already tried to repair several blisters - with polyester. So, I have those to fix, too. On the upside, my older son and I got to spend some quality time opening and grinding out countless blisters. The job was messy, but not too bad. I more dread the filling than I did the grinding. Here are a few pictures.

Wow, I am really shocked by that! I have not had one. I have not heard of that problem in our boats. Were they very deep or just in the gelcoat?

Wow, she is looking great! My poor boat is languishing because I have not been able to get work started yet, still! Now that my mast is down, the list of things to do on THAT is growing now too! And it would sure be nice to get a new boom... it goes on and on... Which hull number is yours? My theory is the whole blister thing may come down to a certain series, in the 100s, or in a certain month or two in a certain year. Only one other person responded with blisters on any boat from the 60s on the Columbia group.

Mine is hull #86 and she was looking good when I bought her, no blister, no potential delamination areas. She had been out of the water for long. I noticed after launching though that the shaft tube must leak into the deadwood because I found emerging water in the bilge. I am not worried about any structural issue but I'll definetely fix it once out of the water, plus inspecting how is bottom after two years and a half of sea water.

I've just read the whole thread, and really enjoyed it (even if I don't have a C29 in my future, it's my type of boat - the boat I am now after isn't too much of a departure, though more so than I originally intended).

Looking forward to more updates, and hoping you all make great progress with your C29's. Once I have mine safely transacted, I'll post some details and photo's.

I am looking at purchasing hull # 161. It is a 1965 with the MKii window. It seems to be a transition from the MKi To Mkii. Would anyone have any information on this hull # boat?

According to the Columbia Yacht owners site:
Columbia Yacht Owners Association
hull 161 was built in 1966 and is must be the MKII. It has the heavier 4100# ballast giving it even more stability than originally designed. I love my MKI ! The only thing to check is if the hull to deck joint is leaking, how is the mast support (any rot at the base) and how the engine/prop/shaft is. Of course rigging may need to be replaced if old and you may want to add another lower shroud, not so much for strength but to stop the "pumping" of the mast. I have to confess I like the look of the dinette interior a little more than my cruising interior, but I haven't been in one yet! You may find spots in the deck where it feels spongey, perhaps the plywood core has delaminated. I would not consider that a big deal, ther is still a lot of glass there. I doubt you'll find one blister on her but I have been shocked to hear at least one 29 did have blisters.
