Tell me how two of the same boat can be 100K different boats, honestly asking.

Been looking at new boats and beyond the obvious why can two of the sameb0at have 100K swing. And honest responses please. Is it all just the equipment? Just want to understand the difference

That's easy. The $40k boat needs $91k worth of work.

Except that the $131k boat probably needs $30k worth of work itself.

And probably neither boat is really worth $131k in any condition.

Welcome to the wild, wacky world of Boat-O-Nomics!

Well, Dockhead pretty much nailed that question. He's right; and said it succinctly too.

First boat looks like someone dumped a @&$#ton of money into it, now needs to sell, and has highly unrealistic ideas about what it’s worth. That’s a $70k boat on a really really good day.

I took a look at the listings. The more expensive boat has just been extensively refitted. The other is in what one might characterize as good condition for its age.

It is not difficult to spend 100k on an extensive refit.

Just had a look.. only at the pictures but.. if it was me I'd buy the Ontario (40K) boat.. to my eye she looks better loved than the CA boat which has just had some money thrown at it.. delivered to many tarted up boats for new owners..
But then I value things differently..

Yes, it's "all equipment" — the testicular equipment of the man who sets the asking price :-)!

Re: Tell me how two of the same boat can be 100K different boats, honestly asking.

These are 30+ year old boats. Look at 30 year old houses and you can easily find two with the same number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but that are $100k apart in price. Or 30 year old cars, probably not $100k apart, but a similar relative amount. At this age condition is EVERYTHING!

(Not to mention, as already pointed out, a lot of boats out there have completely unrealistic asking prices.)

Hmm, maybe the quality of renewals and upgrades or possible damages?

Wear, tear, abuse, damage. cosmetics, significant differences in major systems and conditions, present owner needs and expectations, location, local economics, local costs, broker recommendations, friends recommendations, ad nauseam (this is stuff that has already been said, most broadly by dockhead).

The boat in Caly appears to be well overpriced. For example see this 47 ft Wauquiez that recently sold for less than $69k.

Re: Tell me how two of the same boat can be 100K different boats, honestly asking.

Thank you all for your posts. I'm looking for a blue water boat and have read a decent amount about the Pretorians. Good, solid, fast.
Just don't know enough yet to understand the difference between all the bells and whistles.
I like the price of the lower boat but wondering how much I would have to invest to make it really blue water capable. Planning on living aboard and abroad for a few years.

I thought, "oh it's probably the interior, let's have a look"

Click the lower price one, "Oh yeah that looks bad"

Click the higher price one, "Oh bloody hell. How are they asking that much?"
