I'm doing the math here.

Three rodes. The lengths of chain, respectively, are: 450 + 300 + 200 feet, for a total of 950' of chain. 3/8ths inch chain averages around 1.7 lbs per foot. That's 1,530 pounds of chain in a 33' boat. Switching to metric, THAT'S ALMOST 700 KILOS OF CHAIN IN A 3,500 KILO BOAT.

Ahem. Perhaps the word "goofy" wasn't strong enough.

and let's not forget the fact that the PO had 1,530 lbs of chain on a boat without a windlass.

There is prudence, and then there is over the top. I think what you have described goes beyond prudent, well into the realms of over the top.

I'll bet it looked better. What was the PO trying to do sink it? Did he repaint the bootstripe 8 inches higher?? LOL
