Pros & Cons - CT41 Formosa

We had three CT 41's at my dock for several years. All three showed severe dryrot beneath the large "windows" of the cabin sides. I'm talking peat moss. One removed the entire cabin, then, later (out of the correct sequence) the entire deck and cockpit. Tap the cabinside with a hammer handle or screwdriver handle to listen for a deadened sound, suggesting dryrot.

The pros and cons depend on what you expect to use to boat for. I like the lines, it has a classic old school look. I doubt it would ever take line honors in a race. For cruising in the Bahamas or the Florida Keys the draft would be a big con. I know folks who really like how comfortable the boat is to live/cruise on.

As with all boats of this age the place to start is a close inspection which may turn up lots of cons. Once it passes your once over a good marine surveyor is the next step. This will give you a good idea about possible cons.

Bottom line is the pros and cons are hard to say till what the boat will be used for.

Depends on what you're looking for. Heavy boat that starts to sail in around 10 knots of wind, 15 makes it worthwhile. Here in the light airs of Puget Sound my friend spent a lot of time motoring when we had enough wind to sail. Teak deck with hundreds of screws into the cored deck is quite often a problem, Leaky Teaky didn't come from nowhere.

Many will defend its seakindly behavior offshore in big winds and waves sailing on a reach. I don't know about that as I've only sailed it in PS.

Hi folks,
Just got a CT-41 in pretty good shape. Last 25 years in fresh water, very minor deterioration on decks, rebuilt motor, needs electronics, one fuel tank replaced and similar refit. Would love to talk with others with CT/Formosa boats or experience with them.

Congrats, Vino... I cicumnavigated with a CT 41 around Vancouver Island a few years ago. We had an Ingrid 38 at the time and the CT made the passage outside without a problem. The owner, long since passed, took her to Mexico from the PNW and called me to deliver her north back in 1983. We got tagged by the hurricane that walked up the coast in late Jan of that year and rode it out off Point Conception for 3 days. I must admit I was surprised at how well she did with minimal damage (worst was snapping the steering cable because I lashed the wheel down and and the vessel was slammed sideways in the seaway putting too much strain on the cable... dumb move on my part!)
I can attest to the fact that if cared for well, they are a fine, seaworthy and safe vessel to cruise aboard. Zeehag, who is a regular contributor here, could give you some better more up to date info as she is currently cruising Mexico aboard a CT41 and has a wealth of experience.
I wouldn't hesitate to travel aboard one that had been well maintained. Phil

I've got a neighbor hoping to sell his CT41. It has had extensive rebuilds: new deck, cabin and cockpit, new Yanmar turbo, both masts overhauled, etc. It's going for a VERY good price.
