Re: Offshore Sailboat with Full Keel

In todays buyers market you should be able to find what you are looking for. I for one am partial to full keel. Although my boat, a 37' full keel heavy double ender, (28K displacement), she can throw up over a 1000 ft of sail and in anything over 8 knots gets up and goes. The thing to remember is when you find yourself in the sh*t, (and you eventually will), knowing you have a substantial hull underneath you is a very comforting feeling.
This is not to say other hull designs will do the job such as a modified full keel. My only complaint with my full keel is its sluggish response in tight courters but this is overcome with experience. A fuIl keel with a cut out forefoot like that found on the Tayana 37 would be ideal. I would just stay away from fin/spade rudder combos for blue water but I suspect there are those that would disagree.

Good luck with your search but whatever you do have her surveyed.

Older cruising boats are fairly bullet proof. You do give up some boat speed to newer type models but the easy motion is well worth the difference. I prefer a stiff boat which is what you generally get with the older medium to heavy displacement boats. Of course this is my opinion and I don't know where you intend to sail or how long your passages are going to be.
I hope this helps
Thanks you for your response, any any sailboat brand that you can think of that has the modified fin keel with skeg. And what do you mean by skeg? do you have a picture that you can attach.

a skeg hung rudder would be a rudder hung a short deep keel like appendage, thus protecting it and supporting it better than a modern spade rudder.

Re: Offshore Sailboat with Full Keel

fin keel and strength hmmmmmm don't sound right.
I would not look at a late 80's boat I would go 70's even 60's cant beat 3" plus glass.
I know where a swiftsure 33 is for 1500 but it is gutted and will need new everything just about, but the motor seems nice.
