Is there a 2000poundish boat you would actually go out with?

Hi Everyone,
Some of the small boats that are legendary of sorts, like the Flicka, Dana, etc., are quite heavy, and for a good reason, but is there a boat that is capable, and still light weight? What would you take out into the sea, if any?
What I mean is there a boat up to say 2500lbs that you would consider worthy of taking out to the sea?
To my mind comes the CORRIBEE, which so far I know made the Jester challenge, thou to be honest I consider the Jester people top notch, and a bit crazy thou I do admire them, so may be they would made it even in a barrel with sails
What would be your selection, if any?

well, a Moore 24 just completed a round the world - 2050 lbs displacement.

The Corribee is an excellent boat but I would/did go for the long fin version over the bilge keel version offshore..
The Jester is not the only place they have proved themselves.. the junk rigged Ming Ming has sailed UK to N of the Artic Circle and as far W as the Newfound coast.
I sailed mine non stop from Poole to Bayona, NW Spain and on to Fig da Foz, Portugal raising a few eyebrows on the 35+ftrs passing me mid Biscay and on arrival.. did the same trip in December on a Hurley 22, a proper littlne ship and much heavier than the Corri but handled the gales and big seas well..
The old Westerly 22's have also done well in the Jester, and they have 6ft headroom rather than the 4.5ft off the other 2..
Then theres the French Mini's that do the Transat races, I think one even circumnaved via the Capes..

Way less than 2,500lbs and also proven in Jester Cup and Circumnav is the Tiki 21. You could even go w a bit bigger Wharram and still stay under 2,500. A friend of mine has circumnavigated and did well in the Jester Cup aboard one.

Alessandro (di Benedetto) is a friend of ours (who did the rtw). The most impressive thing in his voyage was that he was dismasted west of the horn, and jerry-rigged at sea and just continued on around the horn to France.

His mini was quite heavily modified. Just for example - see pic of adding rear 'cabin':



But yea, the Mini's are good sea boats, but perhaps more suited to racing-style and less to cruising-style than some of these others.

on the Cal theme, some other friends of ours, Dave and Jaja Martin went round the world on a Cal 25 (along with a couple kids!!!).

Dave is pretty handy, and he did modify/beefed it up.


I will comment there is a difference between "can you" and "should you" with boats in this class. Among the ones mentioned so far, the Moore and the Mini have objectively good stability numbers and structure (at least in racing trim, but even they are often compromised with cruising weight). Some of the others will depend a lot more on the skill, experience and luck of the skipper to stay out of trouble.

SANTA Cruz 27 is a little heavier than you specified but should be considered. I believe they weigh about 3,000 lbs but are easily trailered.

Hobie 33 falls into a similar category. Heavier than specified, but designed to be trailerable (if thats the weight reason). Way fast, responsive, and incredible windward performance. They have been raced offshore successfully, but were never intended as an offshore boat.

Which raises a question for the OP. Why 2,500lbs? Do you want it to be easily trailerable?

And, whats your intended use? Do want to give the Jester Cup a go or just some extended near coastal runs?

Pogo 3 (virtually unsinkable)

Likely would be uncomfortable much of the time but can go anywhere and more quickly than any other similar size sail boat.

I took my Topaz uno plus out from Channel Islands harbor in Santa Ana winds, boat name is Lost Our Minds....I think it weighs less than 2000 lbs and no need to worry about getting water down below.
