Hylas 56 vs. Discovery 55 Mk II

Let's compare the pros and cons. Boat will be used for a year long or more world cruise with a family of 5. (Kids will be 10, 8 and 6)

Have you charted a boat and taken your family offshore for an extended period? More than once? If not that is what I would consider first. Then you will be much more experienced with the features that you like and don't think you have the need for in a boat.

We have spent a lot of family time on my brother in laws Swan 78. This has given us a great deal of insight into what we want.

Lots of family time offshore for several weeks at a time. Kids included. Some on the swan and some on other boats

I'd probably take the Hylas over the Discovery.

If your experience is based on a Swan 78, be prepared for much smaller vessel. I envy your financial ability... but I'd keep my Amel.

The Swan is indeed a much bigger machine and we know we dont want a boat anywhere near this size for many reasons.

Curious why you would choose the Hylas 56 over the Discovery 55 MkII?

I also think that it would be worth the effort to charter each of the boats you are considering. All boats are compromises and this will give you a chance to live with the specific pros and cons of each boat. I would also consider just stealing my brothers boat. )

Totally agree. I wonder if a Hylas, Oyster or Discovery can be chartered

Just a personal opinion... if you can, choose the boat with the least teak (none is best) and a white/beige hull. Dark blue or black really increases the temp inside the boat. Opinions of course...

Re: Hylas 56 vs. Discovery 55 Mk II

We had had a 56’ Hylas since 2012. We have sailed from FL to NZ which proved the Hylas is cable blue water boat. Our boat has been cruising in the last couple seasons in and around Grenada, we are at the age now where are thinking about put our Hylas 56 up for sale. The boat is well equipment and would like to do turnkey transaction. Send me a PM message with your phone number and we could chat. We also owned a 46’ Hylas from 2001-2012, if anything I can tell how great the Hylas Yachts are

Funny how everyone assumes the buyer of larger boats have no experience.
