i got this bristol 1968 '29 sailboat that the grey marine gasoline 4cyl motor is in need of overhaul or possible replacement .does anybody have any light on the subject of electric motors?

The Gray marine 4 was a very good engine. I thought it was far superior to the Universal Atomic 4. Why don't you look into rebuilding it?

yea in a perfect world i could utilize electric and and make the boat safer for my family ,create a cleaner environment both on micro and macro levels but ...
the cost makes the call as the expense is the most affordable. this way last weeks phone call is a 5 k setback as opposed to 5 k for the motor only+ plus all associated cost ...hope to be sailing soon...

Yeah. Right now they are still 100% experimental aside from "docking" use and disneyworld type rides.

If you want to screw around with one, remember there will be zero resale value, ridiculously short warranties, a lot of pioneering work to be done, BUT if you can sell the rights to the Discovery Channel...you might make enough money to walk away with some pride.

I've got nothing against electric propulsion, life's just too short to buck the trend on this. Rebuild your military grade Gray, or drop in another conventional engine.

There's a couple of yachts using electric power. Google it, I did and found three companies offering various setups.

When you said "electric motors" I was wondering if you were asking about hybrid systems? If so, we have quite a few threads on the topic.

I am with hellosailor concerning hybrids. Hybrids are a nice idea in theory, but they still need a lot of refinement and the ability to match traditional diesel propulsion engines in terms of price/performance/standardization/reliability/parts availability/parts costs/simplicity/resale value.

Diesel Electric works well in Subs and Tugs.....Until they can mass produce a unit
most of this will be experimental.

Electric propulsion is not as green as you think

I had a Greymarine 25 in my Alberg 30. Had it rebuilt and was a great motor. I still have the manual and it is in pdf if you want it.
More torque at lower rpms than an A4.
