Oh, different boat. I didn't realize they called both the 25ft and 29ft boats "Tritons". Kind of confusing.

Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!

These days old abandoned yachts can be bought for a fraction from the asking price but even so the problem is to know if they deserve the money one is spending in restoring them.

Some days ago a friend, well it is now a friend, bought on the shipyard I have my boat a good old 37ft for 6000 euros. The mast and rigging as well as the hull seems to be in reasonable condition and the boat is remarkably modern for its age. An old race winner, it weights only 4700kg. Of course the interior needs a renovation but if one does not care about that it would allow one to cruise in it, except for a new stove.

The boat was someones love affair but the guy is now too old and sick to sail and the boat was on the hard for the last 5 years with bills to pay regarding parking.

I believe we will see in the future an exponential number of boats like this selling for almost nothing.

Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!

I found one on craigslist, free boat, 48 ft Choy Lee, 1979 so 56 ft total length. Ketch rig. It has a new engine still in box. Owner wants 7000 us for the engine and can take the boat. Needs a total rebuild...Wife says maybe....anyone know how an old Choy Lee sails? I'm afraid to go look at it. ...

Check for stress cracks in the hull below the water line on that Cheoy Lee. Look for hard points along the fore/aft stringers and separated bulkheads.

Just be careful, often the most expensive boat you can buy is cheap.

Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!

I did go have a look see. As I suspected, needs a complete rebuild. About a foot of fresh water inside the boat. One would have to just scoop out the interior and start over. Hull looked to be in good shape. It has been on the hard for about 13 years. If I had a place to keep it that was free, and a whole bunch of woodworking tools and a large shop, yeah I'd go after it. ...but I don't.

So Sorry. I know the feeling. I have a project too. Redone engine and transmission and a great hull. Lots of work done and too much more to do.
Cascade 42 on the Big Island of Hawaii. Anyone out there want her for $7500?

Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!

I want to sail my 47 boat in November from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco, are there any large transport ships that would haul it back to San Diego in the Spring?
