Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!
I just posted over on classified. A Contessa 26 on the San Francisco Craigslist for $5K. Seems well equipped, but needs some work(like all boats). They are a great small ocean cruiser, if you are young and limber enough for the tight quarters._____Grant.

Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!
Having been on the receiving end of one $400 boat and two free ones I can authoritatively state that the fears of free boat being a money pit are grossly overestimated. Well no more and often less than an expensive boat is a money pit.
If one has weekends free, is not afraid to get grease on one's elbows and is on friendly terms with a local boat junkyard most of those boats can be brought to life for suprisingly little effort (i.e. a really good scrubbing and cleaning and some here and there this and that) and not that much money.
But I also walked away from about a dozen or two of other free or next to free boats in various stages of derelict which were beyond my capacity to ressurect.

This absolutely great..however I initially thought DOJ had amassed a great collection of cheap used boats...I still think it might be possible. For those inclined to get a cheap boat and fool with it...go for it..go to the max. Do it! Don't look back.

41′ C&C Designed Newport 41 Sailboat Sloop
This is a good deal, the current owner has put a lot of work into her, just had the motor rebuilt. There is still quite a bit of work to do on her. All the winches need to be put back on. When I was there he had removed the chain plates on the port side so the mast was supported with lines tied to the toe rail I think.
The reason he is selling is his wife (gorgeous by the way) wants him to spend less time working on the boat and more time with her.
I would have bought her If I could only find work in Hawaii.

Re: Cheap Yachts and Projects for sale / for free!
City of Newport News Virginia, just tried to auction off three boats (1 sail, 2 powerboats). Starting bid was $100. No one bid on them. I don't know what they plan to do with them or if they will try to auction them again. These are absolutely "Project Boats."

That does sound like it might be worth a short person looking into. Nice boats but with really crappy headroom.
