Hi, I used the C hook things for 4 years and had no problem whatsoever. They slide through the windlass as perfectly.

They are a great inexpensive way of extending chain.

Initially I was worried about the join and shackled an extra foot of chain across the C hook but it slowed the process down and was not necessary.

Used the Crosby links on many many oceanographic moorings.

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

I'll go along with Jim and mark we have a good quality c link in our chain put there because of the need to remove a corroded section. Try a search to find a c link failure.
Cheers

Why bother? If it were foolproof there wouldn't be a question. Chain links collapse in the middle until failure, the little pins in a C link will shear off in no time, what are they 3/32"? At best you have 3/16" of steel to shear until failure. Can you imagine the difference between that and pulling apart 5/16" HT steel in tension?
These things may work but don't fool yourself that they are as good as chain.

You don't understand c links. The little pins that are peened are there just to reduce movement between the halves. You don't even need them. Evens wires them together and uses sealant between the halves.

Here is some un biased information
https://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Clinks.aspx
If joining chain is that risky attaching an anchor must be up there with motorized pogo sticks
Cheers

You need to picture how a chain link fails. Evens is daft if he he thinks sealant and wire do anything. I am surprised that "stud link" does not mean something to everybody.

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

What I find interesting is that a lot of people who use G4 chain use these C links without problem.

They are just about half the strength of the same size G4 chain and the link is longer.

You would think these weak links would break and that the extra length would cause them to jump out of the gypsy, but they don't.

The only thing I can figure is that a lot of people use G4 chain when they would be fine with Proof Coil G3 or BBB. G3 and BBB are about the same strength as the C links.

You're right. The peened studs don't take any load whatsoever. They hold the two halves together so they don't fall out when the chain is not under tension. Under tension the two c sections share the load.

I'm seeing specs of a working load limit of 2,650 lbs for a 3/8 " C link
http://www.bairstow.com/v/vspfiles/p...cs/G335380.pdf

and working load limit of 2,650 lbs for 3/8 grade 30 galvanized chain.
https://www.1st-chainsupply.com/WLLchart.htm

So the Crosby link rating is the same as the most common anchor chain grade.

Hi, Guy,

I'm an imaginative female, but I guess you better explain "stud link" to me, maybe at first or second grade level?

Thanks.

Ann

Hey Ann; Ships use anchor chain with studs in the links (stud link chain.) It keeps the chain links from collapsing in the middle which is the failure mode of chain. Picture a chain link with a stud in the middle between both sides. You can't call this feature anything feminine, sorry.

Actually you can go up a size (e.g. 3/8" connecting link with 5/16 HT) and that works out to be a better strength match. The windlass gypsy might complain a bit but it should pass through.

Or: Stay with the same size connecting link as the chain, but add lashings using 3/16" or 5mm Dyneema so you have a belt and suspenders approach. The Dyneema itself has a breaking strength of about 2500 pounds, so if you lash and weave it with 4 turns the splice would be as strong or stronger than the HT chain. The chain and Dyneema combo gives you cut resistance and high strength.

You're reacting to an offhand comment that's somewhat out of context.

Guy, why don't you do a little internet homework about Evans. Read his accounts of his experiences. Not only has he got the pedigree as a circumnavigator (multiple times around) he's done real testing both in the field and in the lab.

Re: Can I extend my anchor chain?

Good article on C Link tests.

https://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Clinks.aspx

It includes an interesting picture of a link approaching failure. It should settle the question of whether the rivets are the weak point.

"Risky as motorized pogo sticks"

I can't stop laughing....

Edit to add,... yep, re-read it and started laughing again.
