Can anyone give me a list of boats that are proven ocean cruisers simmilar to an alberg 37. Im looking for a older boat that can take a beating on a ocean crossing. Dont really want to go for something small like a contessa 26, looking for something around 37 feet. Thanks for your help in advance.

Look at boats by allied, also look at older pearsons like the invicta or the countess. Rhodes 41's are good sea boats also.

You can find some hans christian and union polaris 36's in that price range, although you'll be putting some work in for sure. Decent they're in the ~60-80 range, beautiful >100.

Westsail 32?

You might also want to cheack out the pacific seacraft mariah. My friend has one and loves it.

Are you looking for a 37-footer in that price range that is ready for sea? Forget it. You'll find something that needs work, sure. But that will cost. Go smaller and readier or be prepared to write checks to get the bigger gal "ready to take a beating." Unless, you get very lucky, but don't hold your breath.

You can also find Morgan 382's and Catalina 38's in your price range. The Catalina (same as Yankee 38) were mentioned by Lin and Larry Pardey on their site as a boat they would recommend. They felt the build quality and the price were right for a budget minded couple looking to do some blue water cruising.

$40k will get you a Cal40 if you watch and wait for a deal. But you will then need to fix the problems and outfit the boat. At least one has gone around and another is on the way right now.

$25-40k will get you a Cascade 36. At least 3 have been around.
$15-30k will get you a Cal34 and leave you enough for outfitting. At least 1 has been around and 1 has been to NZ and back.
$17-46 will get you a Ranger33. 1 has been to Australia and back.
$20-40k will get you a Ranger 37.

Buying a good boat is only part of the story. Refitting is a major part, but the most costly is maintenance. You can buy a 50 foot Gulfstar ketch for a little money, but just like a Porsche 928, the ownership will kill you.

Look at Cascade 36 and 29. Many have been there and back. Very over looked boats, most are owner finished so the quality of the finish can vary. I have a 42 and would take it anywhere. Really nice turn key 36 in the Portland,OR area $48k. Alaska vet, health problems have Java on the market.

Couldn't you just buy a 'normal' boat and not beat the crap out of it?

We sure havent found it a necessity.

Perhaps a better look at Lin & Larry Pardy's books will show that heaving to does better than bashing a boat up.
