Bimini height

I have been on several sailboats 28'-40' with bimini's. I am 6'4" and have never really paid any attention to how high off the deck the tops were. I'm guessing around 7'?

I'm asking because while walking around the Moorings monohull selection in Tortola awhile back, I came across a 34' with a 6' bimini.

It did not think about it then, but if I were to charter a sailboat with the shorter bimini I would be screwed.

I guess my question is, should I always ask (& get in writing) the bimini height of a charter to avoid this issue?

Re: Bimini height

It's dependent on how high the boom is in relation to the cockpit.

You can make the bimini as tall as you want, as long as the boom will clear it while tacking.

In some cases (lower booms), the bimini can only be deployed while the boat is not sailing. In other cases (like mine) it's pointless to even put a bimini up since the boom is only 5'10" above the cockpit. In which case, we have to resort to boom-tents at anchor/dock and wide brimmed hats under sail

Re: Bimini height

There is no standard. It's just one of the compromises, some of which every boat demands.
