Aft Cockpit with Aft Cabin?

Hi guys,
I've been searching for a new >40 ft boat that has both an aft cabin and aft cockpit. I was wondering what make/models were out there that had both? I know it is a little more common to see in some of the larger boats. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about a seperate cabin with quarterberths? Or one of those half height hell-holes under the cockpit sole?

'Or one of those half height hell-holes under the cockpit sole?" That was funny!

Basically it sounds you are looking for a deck salon boat if what you are asking for is a centerline aft berth. Otherwise pretty much all aft cockpits will have an aft berth. Heck the aft berth in my Cal 39 is bigger than a queen bed, bed it's not a centerline berth.

Pretty much all the "new" 40 footers have both.

You asked about boats >40 ft, but the CSY37 is aft cockpit w/ a nice aft cabin. Not real big but full headroom, and IIRC the berth could be folded out for a double or up for a bench seat. Overhead hatch and adjoining head.

I'm preferably looking for a separate cabin, but I'm willing to consider both.

I had a C&C 37+ (40ft LOA) for ten years. It had an aft cabin with partial standing head room, a queen berth, a nav station, and an enclosed shower. The aft cabin had no excape hatch.

I have seen these even in small boats. A few of the old Cheoy Lee boats had this even as small as 35 feet, but it was a bit more of the "half height hole" than a true cabin. There will be no love-making going on when the roof is only 18 inches above the surface of the bed.

I've heard it's no fun sleeping directly on top of a 50 horse diesel either. :-) (the heat alone is brutal)

Best bet is to go look around at new models. Everyone will have a few anecdotes to add, but look around for two or three cabin boats and you'll probably find plenty with an aft cabin.

But really if you want a propper aft cabin its really gotta be over 40 foot... well over... I think 45-46 is the minimum for one that designed for real people, not smurfs and their hobbit friends.

Aft Cockpit with Aft Cabin, I own one....

EvermanJ,
As others have pointed out, there are boats like that out there.....
But, many are poorly designed, and/or poorly implimented.....

However, I found one that is truly super!!!!
A 47' aft cockpit sloop...with aft cabin....
And, since I've owned the type of boat you've described for over 5.5 years, and have sailed her 12,000+ miles (including a couple times across the Atlantic, and many cruises in the hot / humid Bahamas, Caribbean, etc.), perhaps I could help????

Have a look at the Catalina 470......

http://www.catalinayachts.com/pdf/470Broltrsz5-01.pdf
and
C470 Projects by Boat Name (scroll down the page a ways...)
and
Catalina 470 National Association

I won't try to BS you....here's some facts of life.....

1) The aft cabin needed more handholds/handrails and lee boards (both of which, I added early on), in order to be useful offshore in heavy seas and be a good sea berth....
But, the big queen sized island berth is nice and comfy.....
and...

2) Yes, in a typical anchorage (with hatches open), there is more natural airflow in the forward cabin than in the aft cabin....but in this boat it's really quite good...with 2 small hatches opening out into the fresh air of the cockpit coaming top, 2 large hatches opening into the cockpit, and opening portholes......(I added a couple of fans, for those windless nights...)
and....

3) It's quite spacious for an aft cabin....NOT cramped at all.....certainly NOT
Quote:
one of those half height hell-holes under the cockpit sole....
I'm a "big" guy.....5' 11" and 250lbs....and there's plenty of room.....
(My brother is 6' 5" and 300+ lbs and he finds it very functional but prefers to use the forward head...)
It's got full height headroom, and plenty of "headroom" / "body room" over the berth.....
and...

4) There's good storage, and plenty of light.....

Hey, the list goes on......
But, my best advice:
Go on board one, and see for yourself.....

Just FYI.....
I grew up sailing on a nice big Hinckley, including crossing the Atlantic, etc...
And, my dream boat was a Hinckley SW-52......but alas, I'll never have that kind of money!!!! (do you have a spare $1.5 Million I could have???)

So, I was looking at Hylas 46, etc. and found the Catalina 470, sort-of "by accident".....
and after a LOT of research (~ 2 years), including tours of the factory, looking at quite a few boats (think more than a dozen C470's, plus more than a dozen others), I found the Catalina 470 to be a real "sleeper" in the sailboat market.....
A VERY stout and structurely sound boat designed and built for bluewater / offshore cruising and voyaging (as opposed to most other Catalina models), with a well-designed underbelly, nice curved bilges forward, a fine entry, etc. making it a quite nice boat offshore in heavy weather...and still have plenty of "room" both in the cockpit as well as below.....

Have a look at the photos and step aboard a Catalina 470, and you may like it.....a lot...

I hope this helps...

Fair winds..

John

here's the listing.

1962 Walsted Classic Custom Sloop Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

We have an aft cabin on ours, but it's two quarterberths- great at sea, but the V-berth forward is the place to be at anchor for us.

Thats the biggest Under 40 footer I've ever seen! Its 60 foot!
---> 60' Walsted Classic Custom Sloop.

Maybe its a metric conversion?

Nice looking boat, though

I checked! the post was "boat > 40' ". Isn't that "greater than"?

If he really wants under 40' , the aft cabin will probably resemble a closet.

Edit! Voila!

With a washbasin in suite!

It's a CC though.
