Advice on roller furler (or replacement)

It's a facnor ls130. it looks like the halyard is wrapping around it up top when I try and unroll it. I'm still messing with it right now

Tighten the halyard... The sail isn't up all the way (likely)

Roller furlers are the nautical equivalent of sliced bread... If it's not, you're doing it wrong -

I'm serious, check ur halyard tension.

I tried raising it some more but it won't budge, not even with the winch.

Here are my current thoughts...get a helper and have them bunch up the sail (so it doesn't blow around at the dock) while I manually unroll it by hand without using the roller. This is the only way I can think of to free the sail up because right now it's rolled up too tight to do anything with.

Hopefully once I do that I will be able to raise it with the halyard a little and the manually wrap it back onto the headstay.

You're at that point of confusion where I'd advise going to a marina and letting them figure it out.. If you over tighten the halyard you're liable to snap the forestay. And a winch on a furler is just no Bueno -

Actually... The stay might have snapped already... Which would mean the only thing holding ur mast up is the halyard...

In other words - go to a marina

Just an update:

I ended up calling some riggers out to the boat. The rope/wire halyard had jumped the sheave. They ended up running a new main and genoa halyard. Once they got up top, they realized that it needed a halyard restrainer as well, to prevent this from happening again. So, they added one.
700 dollars later and I can get my headsail down now...problem is, the UV cover is now ripped up from a storm, because I was not able to properly roll the sail up for a while.

Anyways I read some tutorials online for DIY sail repair, but most of them involve sail tape. Other DIY guides didn't really talk about specifically repairing the UV cover.
Could I just get some thread and run it through the old holes? It's mainly just ripped at the seam...

Do yourself a favour and Take your sail to a loft and get it repaired properly or, if you know somebody who has a Zig Zag sew machine and knows what they are doing. Sails need attention from time to time and if done correctly will extend their life!!

The rigger was telling me it looked to him like it would cost about 400 dollars(US) to fix.
The dacron is not ripped at all. It's just the UV cover. I am astonished that it would cost 400 to sew a new seam into a 10ft section of sail here on planet earth

It's a 28ft boat and the sail is now 9 years old. Would it make sense to just buy a used one? I have seen plenty in this price range with now real damage that would prevent regular use...problem is; how do I find one that works with my furler?

Spot on. Repair is only going to be 150 and that's . I'm really glad I didn't decide to do some amateur hack job on my genoa




It is a little big at 135% though. I would like to get a smaller sail for when the wind is heavier. How do I go about matching sails to a furler? Do they have to be custom made for it?

Furler foils come with sail luff slots/sheves in specific gap sizes. So it's not just the sail size but the luff rope thickness as well which matters. Find out from your owner's manual which size is your sheave and go from there. Most foils I noticed have only 3 or 4 sheve sizes leaving one with a wide choice of luffs to choose from, provided the sail is of the correct size otherwise.

For my used jibs and gennies I prefer shorter luff (by a foot or two) and longer foot as I don't race and for me the visibility from the helmsman's seat is more important than squeezing extra 1/4-1/2 of a knot from the sail.
