His family and friends should have stopped him in time. Love has nothing to do with this.

So who brainwashed him so much that he thought god wouldn’t allow diseases to be passed on? Sad that such a young man could be so stupid and arrogant. I don’t like missionaries. I’m tired of reading about US GOVT being expected to free them when they PO the locals.

You mean everyone should keep their opinions to themselves like you have just done?

No.. opinions are all well and good in their place..
But door knockers and cold callers like Jehovahs Witnesses and the like are a real pain in the butt.

That’s a ridiculous comparison. Netflix is real and quite good.

Uh, you mix up religious beliefs with opinions often?

Maybe this explains why the missionary kept going back till the islanders finally offed him?

Re: Island Visitor Killed by World's Most Isolated Tribe

It's a shame that this thread has degenerated into a series of rants and snipes about religion and this man's motivation. The part of this story that is relevant to Cruisers Forum is that cruisers don't have carte blanche to do as they please anywhere they want to go. Ample information existed for anyone to know that this island is off limits to outsiders. The rationale doesn't matter. It's off limits. Enough said.

Most of the so called religious people today only pay lip service to core dogma. Take away the tax deduction for religious donations (or any other donations for that matter) and only then will you get the real level of beliefs among the general population.

This guy was one disturbed dude with a flagrant death wish complex. The islanders are smart to bury him quickly diminishing the risk of disease transmission. Perhaps these are the same smarts which kept them alive as a culture for the past 50,000 years.

I have a suggestion. Why not go over there and just ask 'em?

I think the guy should have used a higher tech approach to his sermoning.
He could have flown a drone over the island just high enough to not be seen and used a bullhorn playing a repeating sermon from a flash drive in their language which he had previously researched and learned.
That would almost surely convince them of the "sky god" theory.

Kidding of course !

Not so far fetched... it's already happened... Have you ever heard of the Cargo Cult?

Wouldn't surprise me if someone will act on your facetious advice.

So, we shouldn't be allowed to discuss other aspect of the article? Only that he was wrong to go to the off-limits island. There are numerous threads here where I see no such complaint... like the single guy who wants to buy a box truck and live in it to score women. That thread has been going for years and thousands of posts... how much should you we be allowed to discuss about a topic?

There seems to be a lot of pot consumption in those religions to help out the believing.
