Not to be overly alarmist, but a gently sloping shore lets a tsunami dissipate it’s power, whereas a deeper & steeper shore heightens the wave, amplifying the tsunamis power.

At least one cruiser has died. Terrible situation.

I guess the immediate action on earthquake is to get the boat out to deep water if at all possible.

Just wanted to post a note that my dad is fine, whew.
His boat suffered minimal damage.

A friend of mine flew to Fiji on the 24th, as he was planning to sail to NZ. He is probably in the middle of the ocean, somewhere between Fiji and NZ.

I feel a bit frustrated as I didn't take note of the name of the boat and I have no idea of the effects of the earquake. Is there any danger for people sailing far away from the coast?

Any help will be welcome.

No danger whatsoever. He wouldn’t even notice it. A 'tidal wave' at sea would be just a few inches high and pass unnoticed.

Tsunami is Japanese for Harbour Wave... waves that bounce around a harbour but not at sea

The only danger to his health will be the old mutton all kiwi's eat

From today's 'Lectronic Latitude, come word that one of the vessels that was quite literally impacted by the drunken speedboater in Bora Bora lagoon (see "Double Collision Explained" here: Latitude 38 - The West's Premier Sailing & Marine Magazine ) was also taken for a wild ride by the tsunami - with the skipper and crew aboard:

"One of the most dramatic tales from Pago Pago, Amerian Samoa, came from Mike Traum of the NorSea 31 Eva, which was featured here recently after being T-boned by an allegedly drunken powerboater in Bora Bora. As the tsunami approached, Mike and his father went below and battened down the hatches. Eva was launched across the beach and down the highway along with other boats and vehicles. When the boat settled to the ground, inland, the two men initially jumped down and ran to higher ground. In the lull after another surge, however, they returned to the boat, then quickly gathered their anchor and rode and placed it back out in the temporarily dry bay. When the next surge came minutes later, they rode Eva back into deep water, where she remained safely."
