Cool How very amusing ... and revealing

I wake up to find as I expected, all sorts of opinions, disparaging remarks, criticisms, etc. suggesting:

* I'm an elitest BWC who thinks everyone who isn't is inferior

* I have a hidden agenda against Moderators

* I'm playing some kind of perverse game

* The order of poll options is discriminatory and prejudiced

* Anyone is a BWC if they say they are

* I won't vote because I don't like what defines the poll options

* I won't vote because it insults me, my family, dog, and cat!

Oh yes, and lest I forget ...

* I must have been behind the conspiracy that a man landed on the moon 40 years ago when they didn't!

Candidly, if I had do do it over again I would use the categories suggested by Nautical62:

When you go sailing, what kind do you most often enjoy:

1. Day sailing.
2. Long weekend cruises
3. Coastal cruising
4. Offshore cruising.
5. I'm just an arm chair sailor, but hope to change that soon!

Though I suspect that would generate more than its fair share of opinions as well, lest we forget "opinions are like ********, everyone has one".

FTR, what precipitated my generating the poll and its stated categories was based on my recently assisting someone here in NZ to purchase their first yacht. Their plan is to go BWC, though the start date is unclear, and to one extent or another their personal past, present, and future plans align to the poll options. It was simply that which aroused my curiousity and motivated me to create the poll.

The poll simply requested YOU VOTE, nothing more, nothing less. I did not request you make a feabile attempt to validate through your opinion that you are an a$$shole.

Thus, at the risk of being repeatitive:

IMHO, the only individuals who warrant the (above) label are those who:
  1. Simply view the survey, and whose egos and/or insecurity prevents them from voting
  2. those who want to define the poll criteria to suite their own subjective opinions and egos
  3. Those who have nothing better to do than to offer their unrequested perceptions, opinions and criticisms
Which of the above, if any, apply to you?

In closing, permit me to note the following as of this moment:
  • Only 47 out of 890 viewers have voted
  • A quick scan indicates that not one Moderator voted
  • Over 800 people are currently on this site
To paraphrase Christian Van H: I wonder when the 25,000 members, including the Moderators will put their egos, insecurities, and opinions aside and SIMPLY vote!

Oh yes, to GM: I value and respect your diverse knowledge and ability to access relevant information. No doubt you were at one time on some debating team. As it pertains to your post in this thread, if I were on the opposing debating team, mate be assured, I'd "kick your butt"!

The lack of voters, is in itself a vote of sorts!

BlueSovereign,

I think the fact that so many folks chose not to vote, and seemed to not like the way the questions were worded is in itself a sort of vote. Not about blue water vs coastal, but rather about your poll itself.

Don't take it so personal. You made a post and it seems to have generated a lot of interest. I don't think it means means that the others who've posted are @%#^&!*-holes, but just that they take a slightly different view of things than you.

Deal with it, and move on. Maybe a slightly differently worded poll will get a better response.

OK, I'll answer now!

I prefer Coastal Cruising interspersed with long sails to get there. Island hopping is another way to describe it. Run out of islands? Time for an Offshore passage.

BTW AK, you used WAY more dingbats and wingdings then you needed to spell @%&-hole!

I'm not sure a 2nd poll solves this mess. Most people don't like to be polled seems to be the general consensus. It seems to follow as we have a broad and diverse group. It's not just your poll specifically though it would clearly include it. It used to be an admin only function to start a poll, but the polls were poorly worded and needed too much fixing so we just said go for it. I will say they don't usually end this poorly. At this point we have not seen a need to close it. We do like folks to be nice about it though.

Thank you. It’s my diverse and profound (wide & deep) knowledge that allows me to access relevant information; and my interest in knowledge that drives me to seek it.
I’ve never been on a debating team; but I have had occasion to correct the obdurately misinformed.
As it pertains to the possibility of you and I debating this subject; I must decline on humanitarian grounds - it wouldn’t be just & fair for me to fight an unarmed opponent.

I hope we can mainain friendly relations, as we've had in the past; even in the face of wildly differing opinions, in these several regards.

It is impossible to know if a moderator or anyone else who opens this poll thread has voted or not, even if that person left a comment. But, just for the record, when I was 18 I was a fare collector on the Balboa Island Ferry. And the first time I sailed from Long Beach to Avalon, the water was very blue for almost the entire "passage," so I'm calling myself a Blue Water Sailor.

BlueSovereign, the creator of this poll, and many other readers, may be unaware that any person with an internet connection is perfectly free to enter Cruisers Forum and read anything and everything that is posted here, though not everyone who does so decides to register and become a member.

However, when non-members open a thread and read it, they are counted just as members are who do likewise. What these non-members cannot do, however, is post without registering, which also prevents them from voting in polls.

For that reason, posting the number of times this poll has been opened with the reader not voting in the poll is meaningless. BlueSovereign may also be unaware that most registered members don't care to participate in polls of any kind, for a multitude of reasons or no reason at all, even if they take the time to open such a thread and see what it's about.

In addition, all of the many posts to the thread that merely comment on the poll (of which a dozen, or so, are BlueSovereign's), with the poster not voting while posting that commentary, skew the numbers that much more. Of course, members can only vote once, so additional visits to the poll thread by those who have already voted cannot result in additional votes, yet those repeat visits will increase the number of "views."

Given these flaws in the collection of data through a poll such as the one BlueSovereign has concocted, this poll can never be anything more than what one might find in the back pages of a woman's magazine, containing no "quantifiable criteria," whatever that means, and, ipso facto, has no hope of being "validated."

Thus, making the "information informative," as it was put in the first post, is impossible.

A true scientific poll does not allow participants to opt in. Participants must be randomly selected.

LOL! I love your response GM, which is nothing less than what I would have expected!

As to your query: ABSOLUTELY!

We have a blue water capable boat, and the plan is to go blue water cruising around May 2011 but at the moment, we only have coastal cruising experience.
