US East Coast must see stops

I'm going to be heading south this year from the Boston area. I'm not in a hurry to get anywhere other than not see snow or feeling cold. I expect to make it to at least the Bahamas this year.

What are must do/see stops along the way? We like history and museum types of things.

Well... how many years do you have ???/ LOL.

I am not sure using a boat seeing land based museums is the way to go. But any way, for a starter from Boston, you can't miss Hell Gate, Status of Liberty and sail out Verrazano bridge. It is an awesome sight, I don't care how many time you have gone through.

Of course Chesapeake Bay and ICW are a must do.

I would let other to chime in other places.

Why? Yes I can get a guide and look on line etc., but I've been led astray many times by these so this is you chance to use your local area knowledge for helpful sights and stops.

I'll add I'm in a 43' sailboat with 6.5' draft

NYC, you can stay at Port Washington for free and take the train in.
Head up the Potomac and anchor in DC by the yacht club.
Annapolis - anchor in Back Creek and walk in.
Charleston
St.Augustine

Some obvious must sees in the middle Atlantic coast are Cape May, Baltimore, Annapolis, Washington DC, Deal Island on MD eastern shore. I'll let others add more AICW stops since I haven't been that way for years. But much farther south Savannah, Jekyll Island, and Cumberland Island in Georgia and Fernandina Beach and St. Augustine, Florida are favorites of mine.

With 6.5 draft, you can skip ICW. But there plenty places to go in Chesapeake with a 6.5 ft draft. I sailed a 8.5 feet draft for more than a year, going in to Back Creek is not bad.

Hey...thin water is an east coast thing. Just get unlimited towing and you will be fine. It is cheap.

From the NE to Key West, each stretch of the AICW is something pretty special in my book. I bet you'll enjoy the naval history of the Portsmouth/Norfolk area. Further south until FL, beyond major stops like Charleston, it's mostly small towns and wilderness. Lot's of little pockets from a bygone time that you'd never come across if you weren't on a boat making painfully slow progress down the ICW

NC offers some options for jumping in and out, but once you get to SC/GA, the inlets take so much time to transit that it makes sense to either go coastal and bypass or stick it out on the inside. Some of my personal favorites are the little spots along SC/GA. Lots of shrimp docks and fish camps to hang out at eating delicious shrimp and drinking local moonshine. You're sure to meet lots of really unique, friendly characters along the way. Lots of civil war history throughout. Great trip.

if you like history stop in newport, r.i., martha's vinyard (they filmed jaws there) nantucket, mystic seaport in ct, then port washington ny.

What makes you think people here won't lead you astray? We all like and dislike different things so my favorite stops may be a big bore for you.

Buy the cruising guides and read about the possible stops and make up your own mind. Any town you are considering will have one or more websites to give you additional details.

I think I will be in NYC from mid June at 79th street. No history or museums but we can get drunk!!!

Norfolk is nice with some big port tour of grey ships.

Charleston, South Carolina is great. (Good this weekend for TRUMP, TRUMP, TRUMP) Shhhhhhhhh.

Savanah, Georgia. It's really creepy if u have just read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Newport, Annapolis and Charleston are great because they were colonial seaports and everything or everyplace is walk-able! Been to all; worth your while.

+1 for Mystic Seaport. It's been probably 15 years since I was last there, but if it's still the same you actually stay at the seaport and get full access, and can wonder around the grounds at night. Kind of eerie, it feels like an old ghost town. If I remember correctly, the Mystic Aquarium is pretty good too. Not too far away, in New London, is the USS Nautilus museum. Though some may not find subs as interesting as me, but they allow me to afford to have a boat!
