Take 2 handheld GPS units with you and plenty of spare batteries. Transfer coordinates to the paper chart. Compare chart with depth-sounder or lead line too. Nearly every cell phone today has a GPS receiver too. Get the app that will display the coordinates.

It's a good question.

Since you're still "into" paper, you are aware that there are things called books, some of which have been actually written about these very subjects.

I'm kinda kidding...

Chapman's is a very good one, but there are all sorts of piloting books available out there.
