Just heard this on the news:
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco has taken another step forward in its bid to host the next America's Cup. The San Francisco Port Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution supporting a binding agreement between the city and race organizers. That agreement sets the parameters under which the city would host the 34th America's Cup.

Still not a done deal but getting closer. Regarding the subject of whether or not SF bay would be a good venue for the AC—check out the St Francis YC Big Boat series sometime. I'm not a member but I certainly enjoy watching the races…from my boat or just about anywhere on the northern SF waterfront.

Another step closer!

From today's SF Chronicle:
San Francisco considers 2 spots for America's Cup

I was reading today that Ellison will gain huge financially with the city's deal. It will also cost the city money, and give away property that was destined to be what it is today. Give it to Ellison, and he can develope it? What's the real scoop here?

I would love to see the Cup come here, but not at the cost to the city, and fatten the wallet of someone worth some $27 bil...........i2f

By all means never allow anyone to do anything that might make them money. By Gawd, that's so SF.

It looks like the Port Authority is going to use the America's Cup to develop a cruise ship terminal that has been long needed. Doubt Ellison will end up with any direct money from the city unless. The only way I can see them giving Ellison land is if it is to compensate him for building the AC facilities because the city won't spend their own money.

By all means petition your local politician to stop the America's Cup if it will benefit anyone. After all, we can't discomfort the Homeless who've pissed up the city so much that SF literally STINIKS.

I guess I will have to get the article, and go into more detail on how much will be taken in, and lost. As I typed I would love to the Cup here, but at what cost. This is a perfect setting in S.F. for it.

I guess if the 6th richest man in the world makes 100s of millions, and it cost the city 20-100 milllion that's okay? Believe me I am for making a buck, but raping the public is just not right. Once again as I typed before. What's the real scoop? Maybe you know better, and can inform me? I don't believe much of what I read, and that's why I am asking. These backroom deals are made all the time. Usually they are in a backroom, and someone gets the stinky end of the stick & it's usually the tax paying public..........i2f

I went to the hall of fame website and found this video:
From the Helm with Bill Koch and John Bertrand

It was made after the AC fun down in New Zealand and is very entertaining.

A story was filed by AP about 20 minutes ago . . . could it be that San Francisco is going to find a way to lose the chance to host the America's Cup, after all:

America's Cup Talks Heat Up on Both Coasts

"America's Cup officials were negotiating with Newport, R.I., on Monday even as San Francisco attempted to hold onto its chance to host sailing's biggest regatta.

"Tony Winnicker, a spokesman for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, said the Board of Supervisors' Budget and Finance Committee endorsed a host city agreement and sent it to the full board, which is scheduled to vote on it Tuesday. He said the agreement included five changes sought by the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

"Stephen Barclay, an official with both the GGYC and America's Cup champion BMW Oracle Racing, said in a letter to Newsom on Saturday that San Francisco will lose the right to host the America's Cup in 2013 unless an acceptable deal is in place by Friday."

Sorry about the delay, but the wife was here in town, and I have been very busy with the white coats at UCSF. I began to summarize the article, but it was a lot of work, and now it is posted, so here is another look at cost. I am wondering why they are not moving north of the bridge........i2f

It is my understanding that most if not all of the piers/warehouses north of the bay bridge have been condemmed as unsave for most types of use.

The logistics of vehicle support traffic for the AC boats would be ugly.

Besides it would disrupt the view of THE BAY, which is unthinkable.

I havenot seen a condemned pier yet, but I will look with that in mind today. Everyday I ride the Muni that runs along the waterway. When fleetweek happens all these piers are used. They may be in need of repair, but not condemned?........i2f

Condemned may have been to strong of a term. Certain types of commericial use is forbidden. The pilings underneath the warehouses are becoming unsound, as quite a few are in landfill.

Pier 34 looked like it coould be worked over real good, or started over? Everything else seems to be active. I would hate to own, and build a business. Then the city comes along, and displaces me for the billionaire's party.

I do not know how Hunter's Point is being used. It sure seems like an area that could use an infusion of cash..........i2f

Hunter's Point (east of Candlestick Park) was once a Naval Repair facility during WWII. I'm unsure if the Navy still controls the land, but would not be surprised to learn of environmental issus.
The housing in the area is the poorest of the poor.
