There are environmental issues indeed. Hunters Point was the home of the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory, where they brought several af the ships that had been A-bombed in the Bikini Atol for decontamination, study, and disposition.

Most superfund sites are pretty tame in comparison to Hunters Point.

West of the Farallon Islands, which are 26 miles west of the Golden Gate, there is an area that was used to sink 50 gal. drums of radio active waste. In the 1980s, underwater pictures showed bubbles coming out of the drums.
There is a ongoing request to fisherman to report if any deformed fish are caught.

A story in today's San Francisco Examiner claims that San Francisco will, indeed, be host city for the next America's Cup.

Sources Say San Francisco Has America's Cup

"Two people close to the America’s Cup negotiations have confirmed that San Francisco will be the host of the yacht race in 2013. The City has toiled for months over a bid that would lure the sporting event to the San Francisco Bay."

Hunters Point SF

"The housing in the area is the poorest of the poor."

A single family home in Hunters Point of about 1200 sq ft sells for $400,000 and up. The weather is the best in SF and you have lovely views of the bay. There is some public housing in the area as there is in all SF neighborhoods and the predominant ethnicity is African American.

This thread is no longer operative, given that San Francisco managed to find a way to host the America's Cup. The follow-up thread is:
