Moderation and this forum...

Hi all! I just wanted to air this out. Today I surfed over to a forum hosted by a famous cruisers magazine. I really like the mag, I think its a fun read, my wife thinks its sexist. Anyway, I checked out their web forum, and I've got to say this; I once was blind, but now I see; forums without moderation can be truly disgusting. I saw blatant racist (bordering on clannish) and sexist postings, what looks to me to be child porno, and really creepy political postings. I understand why Chuck left recently, and I miss him, as alot of us do, but OH MY GOD!!! There is a reason this forum is moderated, and I now truly appreciate it. I'm not kissing butt here, I mean this. Yeah, I know half of you cant wait to surf over there now, but I was really appalled, and I don't shock easily. Wow, I've seen how the other half lives, and I don't like it one bit. Please support moderation, and their ability to keep this forum on track and aimed at helping cruisers outfit and sail their boats in the best way we know how. END OF RANT, Chris

Its taken a while for people to notice it, perhaps, but yes, Chris, this forum isn't too bad!

I surely don't scream like a girly (is that sexist?) when I get a note from a Mod to pull my head in.

And one other thing... we are all equal. I'm glad there isnt members here who are 'untouchables' where they can say what they like without fear of being stopped.

Probably S. Anarchy

Absolutely no restrictions there... Not that there should be, though.
Can get a little racy and disrespectful at times. I don't agree with some things that are said, but believe in freedom of speech, and we're all adults here. Besides, opinions are like a-holes: everyone's got one and they usually stink (example:this post).

Despite freedom of speech; forums like this are privately owned, and appropriate content is left to the discretion of owner and appointed mods. It is what it is.

I agree with you, Chris. I believe this forum is well run and kept very respectable, even if I disagree with the mods from time to time.

Keep up the good work

Cheers

Bill

I have to say I've been playing a bit on another site as well...idle hands I guess, until I get my PP back and travel again.

For me the other site is more about entertainment.

I do agree with Chris as to the importance of moderation.
But I do think the mods decision not to have a bilge sent me looking for other sources of giggles.....and I did find them.

I’m 8 or 10 hours ahead of most of the rest of you…I rarely get the chance to do any back and forth on threads…like right now there are only 20 members on line….

I miss Chuck and Sully but OVERALL this is an excellent forum. Just look at all the honest support the daughter of the missing cat sailor got here just recently, bottom line is that this forum is populated by good human beings.

I suspect Chris is referring to the Latitudes and Attitudes forum which seems to have a remarkable tolerance for sleaze--so much so that I have blocked it on our systems. It seems that, in the US at least, the exercise of the right of free expression is no longer much tempered by any concept of common decency; hence active moderation is a necessity.

FWIW...
